Modern chemotherapy treatments can result in damage to the peripheral nerves, resulting in a condition called peripheral neuropathy. This condition is characterised by a range of sensory and functional changes that can cause pain and reduced ability to perform daily activities. Cytokines or chemical messengers released by cells are essential for controlling immune responses but, in excess, they cause Crohn's disease and arthritis. Our research aims to block cytokine release as a novel way to ameliorate disease. We have identified specific cellular proteins, called golgins, that can be targeted to reduce cytokines. Here, characterization of golgin mediated cytokine transport in cells and in a mouse disease model is necessary to translate these findings for human benefit

Frail older people are particularly vulnerable to a range of mishaps while in hospital. Good care can reduce the frequency and extent of these problems. Quality indicators (QIs) assist hospitals, and clinical service units within them, to appraise their performance, and to compare it to other hospitals. QIs for the measurement of outcomes for the frail aged in the acute care setting do not exist in Australia or overseas. We aim to develop these indicators during this study.

Care of the aging population will place a huge burden on the Australian healthcare system. It is now possible for health services to be provided across the Internet (telehealth) into the aged person’s home. The problem is there has been a slow uptake of telehealth services. What is needed is a clear understanding of aged consumers’ perspectives on telehealth and why they would engage in such services. These findings will assist in planning health care services for the aged into the future.
