Minimizing human error and maximizing human performance is a major design goal in safety critical systems. The development of methods for affordable human performance modeling has widespread applicability for evaluating user-system interfaces. The compositional method explored here has been shown to make accurate predictions reduce model development time by an order of magnitude. Large safety critical applications, such as military or air traffic control systems, would benefit greatly. The proposed work tests whether the compositional methods will scale to more complex domains. The work will be coordinated with Australian industry, academia, and government research efforts.Read moreRead less

Enhancing Intelligent Robot Navigation with the Evolution of a Robot-Friendly Language. Personal robots are set to become as popular as personal computers. The key ingredient that has been missing is intelligence - not the kind of intelligence that plays chess, but the kind that allows robots to understand the world in the way that we humans do. This project represents a major advance in that kind of intelligence, giving robots the ability to understand the world and the ability to communicate a ....Enhancing Intelligent Robot Navigation with the Evolution of a Robot-Friendly Language. Robot Navigation From Nature: Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping Based On Hippocampal Models. This project will create a new method of robot control that allows a robot to learn a map of any area and then navigate using that map. The new method is based on ideas from recent models of rodent brains.
The resulting improvements in robot navigation offer immediate benefits to the emerging service robot industry. In addition, the act of reproducing a high-level brain function in a robot will inc ....Robot Navigation From Nature: Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping Based On Hippocampal Models. This project will create a new method of robot control that allows a robot to learn a map of any area and then navigate using that map. The new method is based on ideas from recent models of rodent brains.
The resulting improvements in robot navigation offer immediate benefits to the emerging service robot industry. In addition, the act of reproducing a high-level brain function in a robot will increase the understanding of memory and learning in mammals, including humans. Consequently, the outcomes of this research will benefit both robot designers and brain researchers.

The Creation of an Eye Movement Recording Facility in Queensland. There are countless uses for technology that records visual behaviour; these include reading and cognitive psychology research, ergonomic design, web site usability testing, and evaluation of visual information (for example advertising or in ?virtual? environments). As such, recording eye movements has applications in pure and applied research, and in teaching demonstrations for students.

This application proposes to purchase eye movement recording equipment to form a dedicated and truly collaborative facility to measure visual behaviour. The facility would be unique in Australia and would be invaluable to both further understand visual/cognitive processes and how individuals interact with their environments.Read moreRead less
Using Converging Methodologies to Understand Episodic and Semantic Memory. The use of four converging methodologies and a new objective measure of implicit/explicit memory will produce a more fundamental understanding of the relationship between pre-existing and episodic memories. The results will be relevant to the current debate over repressed and false memories. The research will also provide more stringent tests of techniques and methods that are having a large impact in applied research ....Using Converging Methodologies to Understand Episodic and Semantic Memory. Moreover, language is the primary medium for the storage and dissemination of knowledge, a fact that has drawn many computer scientists to attempt to process, analyse and understand language. This network will bridge the many disciplines that are concerned with language, explore new ways in which computational models inform our understanding of human languages, and exploit new opportunities for applying theories of language in the development of human language technologies.Read moreRead less

Contemporary speech science and technology are driven by the availability of large speech corpora. While audio databases exist for languages spoken in America, Europe and Japan, there is currently no large auditory-visual database of spoken language, and certainly not one for Australian English. Here we will establish the Big Australian Speech Corpus, which will support a speech science research and development using Australian English and facilitate the development of Australian speech technology applications from automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech synthesis used in taxi and other ordering services, to hearing prostheses and talking head aids for learning-impaired children, and a range of security and forensic applications.Read moreRead less
