Decision making for lifetime affordable and tenable city housing. This project will study home buying decisions and outcomes and use this to provide new insights into housing affordability and liveability. The project will develop an innovative software tool for Australia's home buyers to explore affordability and liveability during home buying, and agent-based modelling of scenarios for urban development futures.
Innovations in Demographic Modelling for Government Analysis and Planning. This project aims to create innovative and cutting-edge demographic models to better meet the needs of practitioners and researchers. Together with the partner organisations, Commonwealth Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it will focus on creating more accurate and fit-for-purpose forecasting methods for Australian fertility, mortality, and migration, including a policy scenario model to produce population ....Innovations in Demographic Modelling for Government Analysis and Planning. This project aims to create innovative and cutting-edge demographic models to better meet the needs of practitioners and researchers. Together with the partner organisations, Commonwealth Treasury and the Australian Bureau of Statistics, it will focus on creating more accurate and fit-for-purpose forecasting methods for Australian fertility, mortality, and migration, including a policy scenario model to produce population projections by visa/citizenship category and Australians overseas. Expected outcomes of this project include improved forecasting methods reported in open-access papers, user-friendly forecasting software and tools for the partner organisations, and a stronger relationship between researchers and practitioners.Read moreRead less
Helping Central Banks Measure Unobserved Variables Using Real-time Forecasts. The project addresses structural measurement problems confronted routinely by central bankers. The techniques developed, and the estimates provided, will aid directly the Partner Organisations (the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and Norges Bank) and other central banks in formulating monetary policy. The analysis will allow interest rates in Australia and elsewhere to be set with greater pre ....Helping Central Banks Measure Unobserved Variables Using Real-time Forecasts. The analysis will allow interest rates in Australia and elsewhere to be set with greater precision. The techniques developed in this project will facilitate the understanding and communication of monetary policy within the central banks concerned, and enhance communication of monetary policy strategy to the public.Read moreRead less
A theoretical framework for practical partial fingerprint identification. Fingerprints captured from a crime scene are often partial and poor quality which makes it difficult to identify the criminal suspects from large databases. This project will find mathematical models which can estimate the missing information located in the blank areas of a partial fingerprint and effectively identify it.
Innovative Technology for At-Scene Forensic Analysis using Microfluidics and Chemiluminescence. The major outcome of this project will be innovative reagents and strategies optimised for the detection of priority analytes such as drugs, explosives and chemical warfare agents. These will utilise a new technology platform based upon laboratory on a chip/microfluidics to enable the development of analytical methodologies suitable for use at crime scenes. This programme of research falls within a Nat ....Innovative Technology for At-Scene Forensic Analysis using Microfluidics and Chemiluminescence. Through our current forensic science research collaboration the outcomes will build significantly on Australia's existing strengths in rapid detection using new analytical technologies.Read moreRead less
Developing smart embedded host-based intrusion detection systems. Computer intrusion is a major concern in many places. It is estimated that cybercrime cost firms US$1 trillion globally in 2008. Computer intrusion is a major concern in many places. It is estimated that cybercrime cost firms US$1 trillion globally in 2008. Many serious cyber attacks, including cyber espionage, do not generate significant network traffic and can easily penetrate network-based intrusion detection systems (NIDS). Such attacks often attempt to compromise individual hosts and hence they are best detected at the host level. We aim to design innovative host-based IDS, as a complement to the NIDS, to address this issue. The outcomes of this project will strengthen the national capability to resist attacks by criminals and terrorists on Australian networked critical infrastructures and also enhance the global competitiveness of Australia’s information technology industry.Read moreRead less
Detecting Supervisory Control and Data Access (SCADA) malicious programs to protect Australian critical infrastructure. The security of SCADA systems has enormous impact to our national security and economy because they control and monitor critical infrastructure, like power, gas and water facilities and nuclear power plants, etc. This project aims to investigate the security issues and provide innovative technological solutions to detect and prevent such problems.
Infill Developments: Project HOME (Housing Outcomes Metrics and Evaluation). The project plans to improve housing outcomes by evaluating housing design in the rapidly growing infill multi-residential sector, which often experiences design quality problems. The project plans to improve housing outcomes by evaluating housing design in the rapidly growing infill multi-residential sector, which often experiences design quality problems. Set across four global cities, the project aims to use a unique combination of design and social science methods to analyse good design and how this is produced and experienced. It is expected that this will deliver greater definition of and evidence for ‘good’ design as experienced through the real lives of Australian households. Outcomes should include robust design evaluation methods and transition strategies for cities, allowing city decision-makers to improve housing design for many people in Australian cities.Read moreRead less

This project will examine determinants and effects of enterprise entry and exit on growth, export and productivity in Australian industry using innovative panel enterprise data sets which have been collated and linked from existing ABS surveys, administrative data and accounting data. Currently, there is only one short longitudinal enterprise data set in Australia. Further data sets are required if policy makers are to understand patterns and causes of growth and business survival in Australia. Understanding provided from these studies should significantly improve our undertanding of how businesses perform.Read moreRead less
