In this project innovative IT methods will be developed to assist biologists to solve complex and important biological problems. Many important applications in computational biology need very accurate and reliable tools for multiple sequence alignment and phylogeny reconstruction. Unfortunately, current existing tools are unreliable and are prone to serious errors when applied to large and divergent biological sequences. The success of this project will not only make significant contribution to the relevant research fields, but also help achieve goals in certain real-life biological research projects which are unique and important to Australia.Read moreRead less
Algorithms for geometric TurĂ¡n-type problems and network visualization. Recent technological advances have large data sets, in a data deluge. Some of the most critical data sets are networks; examples abound in Systems Biology, Social Network Analysis, and Software Engineering. This project aims for algorithms to construct readable pictures of these networks, and thus make the data easier for humans to understand.
Scalable Visual Analytics for Uncertain Dynamic Networks. Technological advances have provided a data deluge over the past few years, and have led to many large uncertain and dynamic network models. This includes terrorist networks, marketing networks, facebook networks, various biological networks, and software engineering structures. Human understanding of such networks is difficult. This project aims to provide new methods for visual analysis of large uncertain dynamic networks such as these. ....Scalable Visual Analytics for Uncertain Dynamic Networks. Eco-driving has been trialed as a cost-effective approach to reducing fuel consumption, but little research has examined its effects on safety. This research brings together disciplines of road safety, psychology and engineering to address the fundamental question: how can mobility be greener while being safer? It develops: a new theoretical model that optimises environmental and safety outcomes; new persuasive in-vehicle Human Machine Interface supported by cooperative Intelligent Transport System; and, comprehensive benefits evaluation. This research will bring major improvements to both road safety and energy use. Read moreRead less
Human interaction with context-aware computing systems. Currently proposed solutions for context-aware systems fail to deliver systems which are usable for non-IT professionals. The proposed project will show how to design context-aware systems that are usable and whose autonomic decisions can be trusted. Additional benefits include increased scientific competitiveness of Australia, strengthened collaboration with international research institutions, and high quality graduates (PhDs, Masters, Honours).Read moreRead less

Intelligent Computer System to Access Information Directly from the Brain Using High Resolution Electroencephalography and Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. The ambitious aim of this project is to create a novel intelligent computer system which accesss information from the brain. To do this we use repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and high resolution Electroencephalography.

This project will investigate and design ways of interacting with the information infrastructure that maintain natural social interactions, take advantage of physical space and utilise our extensive human abilities to recognise and manipulate physical objects.
Expected outcomes include:
? a theoretical framework that describes the range of possible interactions that mediate information between the physical and virtual worlds.
? a prototype instrumented information environment that demonstrates and validates naturalistic information transactions identified in the framework.
This research is highly innovative in its field. It will use an iterative cycle of video observation, interaction analysis, user-centred device design, deployment and evaluation.

Cooperation and reciprocity at the local scale enabled by social and mobile technologies: an empirically derived theoretical framework. The project aims to build new theories, design tools and social and mobile information technologies to support sharing of resources in local communities. Designs developed through agile software development will be built in communities to support new forms of community communication, agile ride sharing and distributed energy generation and use.

This project aims to explore the opportunities, risks and consequences of broad uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) and to collate evidence on the economics, social perspectives, research capabilities and environmental impacts. As AI becomes more advanced, its applications will become increasingly complex in applications in homes, workplaces and cities. Taking an interdisciplinary approach to explore the opportunities, risks and benefits of AI, this project will examine the economic, social, ethical and cultural aspects of deployment and will present a set of key findings to guide and support policy making over the next decade.Read moreRead less
