Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder in humans, and a rapidly growing epidemic in Australia. AF occurs because electrical circuits called rotors take over the top chambers of the heart. Until now, ablation procedures to target AF have not been able to specifically target rotors, which has meant operations are often long and arduous. Summary
Australia has the highest rate of food allergy in the world. Despite ongoing research into the area, there is currently no cure, with patient avoidance the most effective way to prevent food reactions. A food challenge is the gold standard for food allergy diagnosis. Although definitive, it is associated with a risk of anaphylaxis. My research aims to identify the biological differences between having food allergy and not having food allergy to develop novel diagnostic methods.
Population-based Data Linkage To Investigate The Health And Development Of Children Born After IVF

Summary
In Australia 1 in 25 births are conceived from IVF treatment and this is increasing. My research program will use a comprehensive set of linked population data to address key questions in the IVF field following major changes to IVF practice in the last decade. This research (examining fetal growth, birth defects, intellectual disability and school achievement) has the potential to influence clinical practice and will greatly improve the information available for pre-treatment counselling.
The Clinical Features, Causes And Diagnosis Of Severe Epilepsies Of Infancy: A Population-based Study

Summary
Severe epilepsies of infancy (SEI) are characterised by frequent seizures and are often resistant to treatment. The prognosis is typically poor. The cause is unknown in many infants. This study will identify genes and brain malformations causing SEI, determine the frequency and clinical features of each cause, and measure the diagnostic yield of genetic testing and brain imaging. The findings will improve timely diagnosis of SEI and guide research priorities for development of novel therapies.

Summary
It is difficult to accurately diagnose an individual with dementia especially at early stages of the disease. This project aims to see what markers in the brain differentiate those with and without subtypes of dementia and to see what clinical criteria best relate to these markers. It is hoped that results will improve clinical criteria for dementia and its subtypes, thus improving the diagnostic accuracy of dementia.

Summary
Non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) is a common cause of heart failure and sudden death. Currently, the guidelines for the management are generalised and do not differentiate patients at high risk of disease progression and sudden death. This project aims to identify the electrical and structural properties of heart, to predict the clinical course in patients with NICM. Identification of high-risk patients will help allocate resources wisely and enable appropriate patient counselling.
