Recent developments in genomics require gathering of vast amounts of information in a rapid and cost-effective fashion. To this aim we will develop a new fluorescent labelling technology with adequate throughput and high level of multiplexing. We will exploit recent advances in nanoparticle science combined with our own discoveries concerning rare earth ions as fluorescence activators. Our approach promises a combination of great technological simplicity, low fabrication costs, cutting edge performance and gives an additional time-resolved modality. Our fluorescent labels will be field-tested to search for yet unknown microorganisms.Read moreRead less

We propose fabrication of special-type gels and for the first time use the 4.7 Tesla mini-scanner for dose mapping. Increased magnetic field combined with a small aperture for field dissipation will greatly improve spatial resolution down to micrometers (micro-dosimetry). This new technique will render gel-dosimeters suitable for applications in radiotherapy, industrial and all other radiation fields. Moreover, we will employ new parameter for dose mapping, which is expected to be more sensitive to radiation than the currently used relaxation timesRead moreRead less

This project aims to develop instrumentation and techniques to image fully hydrated cellS for prolonged periods at room temperature in an environmental scanning electron microscope. Multiple fluorescent nano-particle labels will be used to image complex cellular structure and dynamics at ultra high spatial resolution. This innovative bio-imaging technique will be facilitated by the construction of a high speed light collection system that can efficiently operate at the pressures required to stablise water within the cell. Applications for this new bio-imaging technique will also be explored.Read moreRead less

Cathodoluminescence (CL), the emission of light during electron irradiation, has emerged as a unique analytical tool to characterise luminescence centres and study luminescence mechanisms in technologically important materials at the nano-scale. The main aim of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art scanning CL microscopy and spectroscopy facility in Australia. The facility will enable high spatial resolution CL analysis of technologically important semiconductors and novel nano-structured materials, e.g. quantum dots and ceramic nano-crystals. These studies will facilitate a deeper understanding of the physics of light emission from nano-structured materials and enable the fabrication of higher quality opto-electronic materials.Read moreRead less

While many can ?throw away their glasses?, the results are optimised for one viewing situation so that when people move their eyes or refocus, visual clarity is not perfect. We need precise measurements of the eye's shape under dynamic conditions to understand exactly how optical distortions (aberrations) affect clarity of sight. This project is to build a laser device that incorporates a deformable mirror to investigate the interplay between aberrations and visual clarity. This new knowledge is a vital next step to improve laser eye-surgery success.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop technologies to fabricate advanced electronic materials based on gallium antimonide (GaSb), to explore their physics and use them in improved optoelectronic devices.
GaSb technology is in its infancy, therefore basic and applied research is needed to utilise these materials to their full potential for long wavelength photonic devices with unique promise in military and civilian applications: fire detection, missile and surveillance systems, environmental monitoring, biology and medicine.
As an outcome, growth protocols for innovative device structures will be established, the structures' behaviour assessed and device fabrication and characterisation carried out and reported.

This project will develop new methods and technology for the detection of explosives and other compounds using Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance. This technique is of great importance to aviation security and the military and is particularly relevant to the priority goal of 'Safeguarding Australia'. The Industry partner has licensing contracts with major x-ray manufacturers and system integrators to integrate this technology. These investigations should yield improvements in the signal to noise ratio, false alarm rates and the spatial discrimination of targets. This work will lead to significant increases in the value of the technology and open up new areas of commercialization.Read moreRead less
