The Economic And Social Impacts Of Genetic Sequencing For Intellectual Disability

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,263,576.00
    Summary
In this project we will quantify the social and financial costs to families of severe intellectual disability that is genetic in origin. We will assess these impacts in terms of poorer carer health, relationship breakdown, lost income and risk of poverty, as well as increased dependence on government, particularly on welfare payments, and reduced personal income tax paid. We will then determine the extent to which modern clinical genomics can contribute to ameliorating these impacts.

    Summary
Distress interferes with the ability to cope with cancer, its symptoms and treatment. Checking for distress and offering the right type of support should help reduce distress. In collaboration with state Cancer Councils, this study will test the costs and benefits of putting structured care into practice for people using Cancer Council telephone support services.

The Role Of Emerging Gastrointestinal Viruses In The First Two Years Of Life: A Birth Cohort Study

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $392,534.00
    Summary
Gastro illnesses are common and potentially serious early in life. We are aiming to find out more about these illnesses by following ~140 children from birth to their second birthday, with parents collecting a dirty nappy swab every week. Our laboratory will test these samples for a wide range of known and new gastro viruses, and we will also be looking for, as yet, undiscovered viruses. This information will allow us to document the burden of these illnesses in young children and their families .... Gastro illnesses are common and potentially serious early in life. Quantifying The Burden Of Atrial Fibrillation: Impact Of Existing And New Treatments And The Potential For Prevention

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $398,395.00
    Summary
Atrial fibrillation (AF) causes considerable morbidity and burden to the Australian economy. We will quantify the prevalent burden and costs of hospitalised AF, ascertain the risk of major events associated with AF and the impact of existing treatments, and determine the population-attributable risk for AF due to emerging risk factors. Our data will inform clinicians and health policy makers regarding the most effective allocation of expensive health care resources to minimise the burden of AF.

Understanding Health Service System Needs For People With Intellectual Disability

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,216,389.00
    Summary
The health of people with intellectual disability (ID) is one of the poorest of any group in Australia. People with ID experience higher rates of ill health, poor access to responsive health services and premature death. Our research will develop the first comprehensive profile of health, health service and medicines use and costs for people with ID, and will examine the impact of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) on these metrics.
