Summary
Using anthropology of finance to study disaster relief. This project aims to broaden and re-theorise economic definitions of insurance through ethnographic methodologies and feminist studies of finance. Using responses to weather disasters and the financial products created to cover them, the project will explore cultural understandings of protection and damage through a Latin American case that foregrounds experimental and emerging adaptation. Enlightened Explorations?: Revisioning Gender and Sexuality in British and French Exploratory Voyages of the Pacific. This project aims to compare the representations of gender and sexuality on British and French exploratory voyages of the Pacific from the late eighteenth to the mid- nineteenth century. Starting from the islands of Samoa (Tcherkézoff ) and Vanuatu (Jolly), we will consider the centrality of gender and sexuality in categorizations of different ?races? or ?nations? and especially ....Enlightened Explorations?: Revisioning Gender and Sexuality in British and French Exploratory Voyages of the Pacific. This project aims to compare the representations of gender and sexuality on British and French exploratory voyages of the Pacific from the late eighteenth to the mid- nineteenth century. Starting from the islands of Samoa (Tcherkézoff ) and Vanuatu (Jolly), we will consider the centrality of gender and sexuality in categorizations of different ?races? or ?nations? and especially the distillation of the contrast between Polynesia and Melanesia. This project innovatively combines an analysis of past and contemporary configurations of gender and sexuality across the Pacific, using historical and ethnographic methods to address interconnected questions about women, men and transgendered persons. Sexual contracts in Burma and Cambodia: Intersections of Desire, Duty and Debt. Prostitution, sex trafficking, and violence against women are global concerns. A better understanding of the underlying context that permits women and children to be abused in this manner in other cultures will allow Australia to assist in addressing these problems - in our own multicultural society and abroad - in a culturally appropriate manner that will prove far more effective than current approaches. Maid in China: Gendered Mobilities, Internal Migration, and the Translocal Imagination. Internal migration always restructures the spatial imagination, and variably across different social groups. In China, gender, class and power relations are important determinants of both mobility and concepts of place. Studying the phenomenon of the migrant baomu (the domestic maid), this project hypothsises that the emerging translocal practices of rural-urban migrants have significantly reworked the spatia ....Maid in China: Gendered Mobilities, Internal Migration, and the Translocal Imagination. Internal migration always restructures the spatial imagination, and variably across different social groups. In China, gender, class and power relations are important determinants of both mobility and concepts of place. Studying the phenomenon of the migrant baomu (the domestic maid), this project hypothsises that the emerging translocal practices of rural-urban migrants have significantly reworked the spatial imagination of the Chinese people. This project will lead to a new conceptualisation of place and space, with the flow of people and the flow of media images brought into productive interface. Beyond the family: relationships of intimacy in contemporary Japan. In Japan the average age at first marriage is increasing, more people are remaining unmarried and overall women and men spend proportionately more of their life single. This project examines the roles that relationships outside of marriage, particularly friendships, play for Japanese women and men in light of these broad changes.
Infertility, IVF and reproductive tourism in Thailand and the region. This project will deepen our knowledge of the cross-cultural issues involved in infertility and the transfer of assisted reproductive technologies in the Asian region. Australian IVF expertise and technology is exported overseas and the project will reflect upon the processes and dilemmas involved in this. Innovative work on reproductive tourism will develop new theoretical insights as well as describe a growing social phenome ....Infertility, IVF and reproductive tourism in Thailand and the region. Gender violence, women's empowerment and human rights in Melanesia: exploring the French connection. This project examines the varied prevalence and acceptance of gender violence in Francophone and Anglophone Melanesian countries. It challenges the predominant view that the promotion of women's human rights ideals, in isolation from broader empowerment strategies, will encourage women to resist their exposure to this violence.
Vulnerability and resilience in Indonesian women suffering from cancer. This project aims to investigate the social processes shaping middle-aged women’s vulnerability and resilience to cervical cancer in Indonesia. This project will generate a new interdisciplinary approach to investigating how different factors such as age, socioeconomic status and gender intersect to influence women’s vulnerability across their life course.
