Understanding material behaviour under dynamic loading is essential in dealing with many engineering problems as excavation, fragmentation, earthquake, blasting, and structure design. In geotechnical and structure projects, materials are often subjected to existing confining stresses. The full-field optical techniques, with an ultra-high speed and resolution camera in the system, aims to assist the quantitative measurement of deformation fields including small strain induced in brittle material's failure and identification of constitutive parameters.Read moreRead less
Engineering service work, global production networks and employment relations in Australian mining. Leading segments of Australian mining have embraced automated mining. This project will focus on the world's two leading engineering companies - Komatsu and Caterpillar - which are providing and maintaining this equipment. This restructuring is grounded in global production network theory and labour skill issues at the centre of this technological transition.
Avoiding catastrophic failure of cable bolts in underground mines. This work aims to identify the factors responsible for the emerging problem of catastrophic failure of high-load cable bolts in underground mines and develop strategies for resisting their failure. The work is of high importance since failure of cable bolts is now being reported in several mines across Australia and is expected to become a problem world-wide. The work is novel as it intends to be the very first study of catastrop ....Avoiding catastrophic failure of cable bolts in underground mines. The work is novel as it intends to be the very first study of catastrophic cable bolt failure. The expected outcome is the development of economically viable solutions for avoiding catastrophic cable bolt failure. It is anticipated that the findings will also be relevant to the civil engineering sector.Read moreRead less
A theoretical framework for practical partial fingerprint identification. Fingerprints captured from a crime scene are often partial and poor quality which makes it difficult to identify the criminal suspects from large databases. This project will find mathematical models which can estimate the missing information located in the blank areas of a partial fingerprint and effectively identify it.
Machine Learning for Fracture Risk Assessment from Simple Radiography. This project aims to develop a novel, reliable, low-cost system to detect poor bone health and assess fracture risk to help to prevent and manage osteoporosis-related fractures. Currently, osteoporosis-related fractures cost our health system millions of dollars annually and costs are increasing with our ageing population. Early detection of poor bone health will improve the effectiveness of preventive measures and ease this ....Machine Learning for Fracture Risk Assessment from Simple Radiography. Early detection of poor bone health will improve the effectiveness of preventive measures and ease this burden. Current methods include unreliable, crude clinical and visual guides that suggest osteoporosis screening. The project plans to develop a novel system by applying machine learning algorithms to radiology data which is commonly captured for diagnosing other conditions.Read moreRead less

National rock, concrete and advanced composite testing capability:
The aim of the project is to develop a national hybrid biaxial/true triaxial load testing facility to serve the needs of geotechnical, structural, mining and materials researchers and engineers for sophisticated testing. It would address the need for leading edge testing and analysis of the deformation and strength of rock, concrete, and thin plates comprising metals, composites and polymers, under a wide range of loading conditions. The facility would accommodate cubic specimens up to 300 millimetres and be able to apply 10 megapascals of stress in up to three orthogonal directions. State-of-the-art monitoring equipment is designed to assess the degree of damage caused by testing, simulating damage induced by blasting, cutting, static loading and/or impact.Read moreRead less
Temporal Trends In The Incidence, Site And Survival Of Metastatic Breast Cancer In Australia

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$190,494.00
Summary
There have been major advances in breast cancer treatment over the last decade. This project will use information collected from the NSW cancer registry and hospitals to report on changes in the type and risk of breast cancer spread and survival for women with a new diagnosis of breast cancer before and after new treatments introduced since 2005. This information is essential for doctors to provide women with up-to-date information; and for planning appropriate health services and research.

Offshore oil and gas production makes a significant contribution to the Australian economy and enhances our energy security. Australia's vast deep-sea reserves of hydrocarbons lie on the NW Shelf and in Bass Strait, ecological 'hot spots' that are extremely vulnerable to the impact of exploration, extraction and production. Using deep-sea equipment, we will conduct the field experiments that are essential to understanding these ecosystems and the impact of deep-sea structures. Our advances will produce data and develop methodologies that will make Australia a world leader in reconciling our deep-sea energy and environmental needs.Read moreRead less
