Summary
Understanding how brain cells translate sensory input into behaviour is central to explaining how the brain works. My research focuses on the long-standing question of how information from different brain regions is received and processed within individual brain cells. This research is crucial to understanding brain function and can provide a greater understanding of the neuronal processes underlying diseases such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, depression and alcoholism.

World-wide more than one million total knee replacements (TKR) will be performed for end-stage knee osteoarthritis in 2016 alone. With an ageing population, demand for this procedure will increase dramatically, placing burden on a constrained health system. Up to 25% of TKR recipients experience on going pain after surgery and are dissatisfied with TKR. My research seeks to improve efficiencies and equitability of this important surgical procedure and in doing so optimise patient outcomes

Summary
Vaccines are highly effective in preventing infection. Increasing numbers of vaccines are available to children and to national immunisation programs. Research is required to ensure that vaccines included in national programs are effective and safe. We must also understand why some children are not vaccinated and to assess ways to improve uptake. Focusing on two common disease, influenza and pneumococcal disease, this fellowship will address these unanswered questions.

Alcohol misuse impacts significantly Australia’s health. More effective treatments are needed. Computer-based, decision-making tools improve treatment outcomes. Based on genetic and psychological prognostic information provided by these decision-making tools, individual patient’s strengths and weaknesses can be identified and targeted in treatment. We expect this will significantly improve treatment outcomes in this chronic, relapsing condition.

Globally tuberculosis infects over 9 million people yearly. In low incidence countries TB is re-emerging, with HIV, drug resistance and migration driving this. Australia needs to examine the transmission of TB within our country and The Asia-Pacific region. This proposal will quantify the risk for importation of highly drug resistant TB into Australia and assess the factors that lead to outbreaks. This program of research will develop and evaluate improved strategies for communication and decision making in medical testing for consumers, patients and clinicians. Better understanding about medical tests and improved interventions to support decision making will enable patients and clinicians make more informed and more appropriate decisions about when and when not to test. This work forms part of a broader objective to build health literacy and shared health decision making in Australia.
