Trial Of Helpline Support For Lung Cancer Patients
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$321,250.00
Summary
Lung cancer patients have particular need for information and support but do not initiate contact with community-based services such as the Cancer Helpline. This study will use a proactive approach to engage this group with the Helpline. It will also test electronic and telephone-based approaches to providing information and support to this very vulnerable group.
Reducing Vaccine Preventable Diseases In Children: Using National Active Hospital-based Surveillance To Evaluate And Improve Immunisation Program Performance
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,049,916.00
Summary
This proposal aims to evaluate and improve upon immunisation policy and programs for the prevention of severe childhood influenza and pertussis. Using our successful Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) network in 6 major children's hospitals across Australia, we will identify gaps in the evidence base needed to better control influenza and pertussis and in particular to ensure programs are delivered in such a way so as to address health inequalities.
Application Of A Novel Research Design To Aid Disinvestment From Existing Health Technologies With Uncertain Effectiveness, Cost-effectiveness And/or Safety.

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$258,643.00
Summary
Health policy makers and managers need to make choices between funding some health services and not others. This decision is made difficult when there is limited evidence as to whether the health service in question is effective, cost-effective and safe. Removing a health service when there is uncertainty exposes patients to risk of poorer outcomes. Whole Of Systems Trial Of Prevention Strategies For Childhood Obesity: WHO STOPS Childhood Obesity
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,430,325.00
Summary
This grant tests a new approach to childhood obesity prevention which provides a way for all members of a community to play a role in improving the health of children.
Surveillance And Treatment Of Prisoners With Hepatitis C (SToP-C)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,560,494.00
Summary
SToP-C will investigate whether a significant reduction in hepatitis C infection in NSW prisons is possible with a “treatment as prevention” strategy. It will treat prisoners for hep C infection both to improve their own health and to make onward transmission to others less likely. There is currently a lack of available effective strategies; however through delivery of simple, effective new therapies this world-first trial offers significant opportunities to reduce the burden of liver disease.
Reducing The Impact Of Early Life Disadvantage Via The Home Learning Environment
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$658,283.00
Summary
Australian children from disadvantaged families are 2-3 times more likely to be behind their peers at school entry. This project investigates the long-term effects of smalltalk, a parenting program to help parents support their children’s early development by enriching the home learning environment. We will examine the effects of smalltalk on the home environment, children’s school readiness and socio-emotional development, and assess its long-term health, education and economic benefits.
REACH: Researching Effective Approaches To Cleaning In Hospitals
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$657,862.00
Summary
Healthcare associated infections are a major challenge for hospitals. Infections can spread via the patient environment, because colonized patients and staff can contaminate surfaces and equipment with micro-organisms. Cleaning is a vital component of patient care, but is a complex process with little real evidence to inform practice. This project will take a targeted approach to improving hospital cleaning to reduce infection rates; and examine the cost-effectiveness of this approach.
QUality Improvement In Primary Care To Prevent Hospitalisations And Improve Effectiveness And Efficiency Of Care For People Living With Heart Disease (QUEL)
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$828,305.00
Summary
Heart disease accounts for a great number of deaths and admissions to hospital. We aim to improve ongoing prevention for people with heart disease by supporting general practices to use their data and provide more systematic care. We propose a randomised trial to determine whether a practice level strategy reduces cardiovascular events and hospitalisations and saves money. The research will directly inform government decision-making and policy regarding primary care incentive payment programs.
Evaluation Of A Financial Incentive To Improve The Use Of Preventive Medicines By People With Asthma
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$137,860.00
Summary
Rising costs are threatening the future viability of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. New approaches are needed to address this challenge, including developing financial incentives for consumers to use effective low cost medicines in preference to higher cost alternatives. This study will develop a consumer incentive for use of low cost asthma preventer medicines, model the economic effects of this and bring together stakeholders to examine the policy and practice changes needed to implement ....Rising costs are threatening the future viability of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
