The Role Of Paramyxovirus P Protein Subcellular Trafficking In Virus Pathogenicity And Antagonism Of Host Interferon Responses
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$78,491.00
Summary
Emerging zoonotic viruses pose a major health threat worldwide, highlighted by recent outbreaks of viruses such as Nipah and Hendra via interspecies invasion to infect humans. A major barrier to interspecies infection is the innate immune response, which viruses must evolve to combat before successful infection can occur. We aim to examine in detail the mechanisms underlying immune evasion of such viruses, with the ultimate goal of discovering novel targets for therapeutics to viral infection.
THE EFFECT OF LONG ACTING BRONCHODILATORS ON VENTILATION IN COPD
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$143,676.00
Summary
COPD is a common and important smoking-related lung disease. Well-established treatments with inhaled medications including long-acting bronchodilators have a proven clinical track record. However the physiological basis for their effects is still under investigation. This research examines some of the physiological changes in lung function and the response to long-acting bronchodilators in patients with COPD, and may help explain why some patients respond to therapy while others do not, leading ....COPD is a common and important smoking-related lung disease. HMGB1: A Novel Player In The Pathogenesis Of Inflammatory Myositis?
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$84,800.00
Summary
The project aims to determine whether HMGB1, a pro-inflammatory molecule, plays a key role in the cause of inflammatory myositis, an extremely disabling muscle condition characterised by progressive weakness.
Assessment Of Non-communicable Diseases And Associated Risks Among Indonesian Adolescents
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$128,224.00
Summary
Adolescents experience a significant burden of disease from preventable non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and several risk factors for later development of NCDs are potentially modifiable during adolescence. In Indonesia, limited data measuring NCD risk factors, prevalence and outcomes in adolescents contributes to a policy and practice gap. This study aims to explore the burden of NCDs experienced by Indonesian adolescents and examine opportunities for health system change.
Targeting Transcriptional Addiction For Cancer Therapy
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$128,224.00
Summary
.Tumours driven by the oncogene “Myc” are difficult to treat and an effective means to directly target Myc using small molecules has proven elusive. We have discovered that Myc-dependent tumours are dependent on their ability to globally amplify gene expression through a mechanism that involves the CDK9 enzyme and possibly other related enzymes. I will test the effectiveness of targeting CDK9 in a range of tumours with a Myc dependency, both alone and in combination with other small molecules.
Clinical Phenotypes And Novel Neurophysiological And Immunological Biomarkers In Inflammatory Neuropathy And Neurodegeneration
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$83,970.00
Summary
The aim of this project is to define subgroups of inflammatory neuropathies by correlating clinical phenotypes with immunological & neurophysiological profiles. The identification of specific autoantibody markers in patients with inflammatory neuropathies will aid in diagnosis &differentiation from motor neurodegenerative disorders. Identification of prognostic novel biomarkers that predict response to immunotherapy will be invaluable in the clinical setting & allow for better treatment planning
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a condition which causes inflammation in many different organs and can lead to significant suffering and death. Glucocorticoids (GC) are very good at controlling inflammation, however they have severe side effects such as diabetes and bone thinning, and cannot be used long term. This project aims to investigate a protein “GILZ” in patients with SLE. GILZ may have similar anti-inflammatory effects to GC but may not be associated with the same side effects.
Improving Epidemiological Assessment For The Prevention Of Travel-related Infectious Diseases
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$132,743.00
Summary
Understanding the epidemiology and healthcare burden of travel-related infections is important in order to improve the provision of pre-travel preventive healthcare in Australian travellers. Exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on perceptions of travel-related risks, attitudes towards travel, and pre-travel preventive health seeking behaviour is also critical to improve the provision of safe travel advice and optimise pre-travel preparation among Australian travellers.
To Improve The Diagnosis Of Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy Using New Genetic Techniques Of DNA Sequencing Known As Next Generation Sequencing
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$101,991.00
Summary
Diagnosis of Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LMGD) is complex with only about 50% success rate. New technology, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) can identify a diagnosis substantially quicker and cheaper than standard methods, however is only available in research. The results of this study will form a core resource that can be augmented in the future to identify rarer forms of LGMD, so that all patients can be provided with a genetic diagnosis.
