Summary
Arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions place an immense and growing burden on the world’s population. They affect 28% of Australians (>6.1 million people). With the support of CRE funding, the Australia and New Zealand Musculoskeletal (ANZMUSC) Clinical Trials Network will optimise musculoskeletal health through high quality, collaborative clinical research, building research capacity and effective transfer of research outcomes into clinical practice and health policy.

Summary
Humans and other animals can optimise their goal-directed behaviour by linking stimuli or actions to consequent positive and negative rewards. How does an animal generate such associations, and make decisions in the natural environment where the associations are often uncertain, at times contradictory, and continuously changing? This project uses rat whisker system as an animal model to identify the neuronal basis of perceptual decision making and the role of context.
A Randomised Controlled Trial Of Caseload Midwifery Care

Summary
There is concern about the rising levels of caesarean section in Australia and some evidence that women may benefit from caseload midwifery care. This randomised control trial will determine whether caseload midwifery care can reduce interventions and is as safe as usual hospital maternity care. A Cochrane systematic review of midwifery led care versus routine care was designed to answer these questions.This will be the first randomised controlled trial to contribute to this review

A new approach to understanding decision making. Mathematical theories of decision-making have helped us understand many aspects of psychology (such as ageing, gambling, psychological disorders and consumer decisions). This project will extend these theories to a new level of finer-grained analysis, opening up new possibilities for understanding cognition and behaviour.

Venesection Or Expectant Management For Moderate Iron Overload In HFE Related Hereditary Haemochromatosis

Summary
Haemochromatosis is a preventable genetic iron overload disorder. Untreated, it can shorten life due mainly to liver cirrhosis and cancer. It can be prevented by blood donation to maintain normal iron levels. It is unclear, however, whether treatment is necessary when individuals have moderate elevation of iron in the body. This research project will study the effects of treatment in this group by assessing a number of scans, questionnaires and blood tests in treated and untreated individuals.
Improving Global Tuberculosis Control With The AuTuMN Platform

Summary
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s leading infectious killer, with the failure of global control responsible for the vast majority of Australia’s cases. Using our robustly developed software platform, we have performed several country-level studies to predict the future burden of disease and compare the impact of alternative responses to controlling the epidemic. In this project, we will extend our platform to perform simulations at the global level and answer key questions in TB control.
Preterm birth is a major cause of neonatal death and cerebral palsy. This grant will provide proof-of-concept that a computer program can be developed to predict a pregnant woman�s risk of preterm birth. There is a large market (4M US and 8M Europe), there are no competing technologies. This is a unique collaboration between Biomedical Engineering and an Australian centre with an international reputation in preterm birth, assisted by a pathology company.

The aim of the study is to extend the evidence-based approach we have developed for speed management (cognitive integration speed management training) to hazard management, thereby developing cognitive integration hazard management training for young drivers.
