Energy Conversion and Signal Transduction in Nanomechanical Systems. Miniaturization of materials and electronic devices is an important technological goal. In order to make smaller working devices,we need to understand how to create molecular scale devices such as valves, switches, pumps and motors. This Fellowship will explore ways to make smaller, portable devices that can be used for personal health monitoring, environmental sensing and the detection of disease and pathogens.
Biologically-Inspired Recognition and Processing in Colloidal Systems. The proposed research will enhance the understanding of forces and adsorption in biologically-inspired synthetic systems, and thereby create new strategies for improving selective adsorption, stabilization, coagulation, and separation. The expected outcomes are: increased understanding of chiral interactions at surfaces, a technique for rapid measurement of surface selectivity, new and better agents for chiral separation, a ....Biologically-Inspired Recognition and Processing in Colloidal Systems. The expected outcomes are: increased understanding of chiral interactions at surfaces, a technique for rapid measurement of surface selectivity, new and better agents for chiral separation, a reduction in the use of organic pollutants, new methods for colloidal processing that will enable the preparation of new materials, and new surface coatings for increasing the useful life-time of medical implants.Read moreRead less
Probing the Interface Between Polymeric Photonic Materials and Biology. This application provides a basis for Professor A. B. This application provides a basis for Professor A. B. Holmes to develop a collaboration between the University of Melbourne (within the Bio21 Institute initiative) and CSIRO Division of Molecular Science to prepare novel plastics for electronics applications (lap top displays, transistors and solar cells) and to make specialised macromolecules for studying the way in which biological molecules may be made to recognise other molecules and thus change their function. It is envisaged that the multidisciplinary research collaboration will lead to commercial opportunities in "plastic electronics" and in human health such as the control of cancer and infectious diseases.Read moreRead less

Ethonographic research will be conducted with Australian men and women who have had serious chronic illness and surgery, including stroke and kidney disease. Comparative research will be conducted in Thailand, the Cameroon and Haiti throughcollaborations developed during the Fellowship. The work will contribute to international debates about wellbeing, social capital and resilience in different cultural, social and economic settings.Policy implications relate to community connectedness, health and welfare services, and infrastructure.Read moreRead less

When cells fail to die when they should they can develop into cancers. In heart attacks, stroke and neurodegenerative diseases, many cells appear to activate their self destruct mechanism to die unnecessarily. Drugs that can cause cancer cells to kill themselves, or drugs that prevent cells dying when they shouldn't, would make a major impact on many important diseases. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of cell death is the first step towards developing these drugs.Read moreRead less
Islam and Modernity: Syari'ah, Terrorism and Governance in South-East Asia. Our region faces major political and legal challenges in the post-Cold War era, one of the most important of which is militant Islam. Australia has historically paid little attention to the implications of its location immediately to the south of the world's largest Muslim populations but 9/11 and Islamic terrorism in SE Asia have shown that regional Islam is of direct strategic and security importance for our welfare. There is, however, a significant gap in Australian understandings of Islam and Islamic law (syari'ah) and their implications for regional governance. This program addresses this gap, updates scholarship on SE Asian syari'ah, informs Australian foreign policy and builds bridges with SE Asian Muslim scholars and lawyers.Read moreRead less

This Fellowship will help build and strengthen significant world-class research capacity at the frontier of fundamental science. More students will be motivated to pursue careers in science, increasing the number of talented, world-class science graduates in Australia. It will forge strong research links both locally and internationally so as to enhance existing networks and create new ones. It will greatly enhance Australia's standing in particle physics, the epitome of Big Science, and garner new respect from one of the world's most influential scientific communities. Having this kind of world-class research in Australia, will also help foster public education and advance the public understanding of fundamental science.

The survival of our species reflects a delicate balance between infection and immunity. Whether an individual mounts an effective immune response or succumbs to microbial infection is critically dependent on host proteins interacting effectively with microbial antigens, versus microbes developing sophisticated strategies of invasion and immune evasion. This proposal will provide fundamental advancement of knowledge in the areas of infection and immunity. The information gleaned from this research will lead to the rational development of therapeutics. Consequently, the research will potentially have an enormous global impact in the area of biomedical health.Read moreRead less

There are huge gaps in our understanding of how legal rules and processes impact population health and the quality of health care services in Australia. This research program will begin to fill those gaps by addressing topical issues such as medical negligence litigation, the coroner's role in injury prevention, and the use of medical science in the courtroom. The findings will be useful to government policymakers, regulators, and judges, as well as professionals working in both the legal and health care fields. But most importantly, the findings will serve patients by helping to shape strategies and reforms that enable Australia's health care system to deliver services that are safer, of higher quality, fairer, and more efficient.Read moreRead less
