Metabolic and hormonal factors probably play a role in a womans chance of developing and surviving gynecological cancer, but the exact mechanisms are unclear. This project will use questionnaire information, blood and tumour samples of over 5,000 Australian women to examine the mechanisms leading to cancer development and survival among women with uterine and ovarian cancer, the two commonest female reproductive cancers. Results will help plan primary prevention strategies and care.

Summary
Removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) is the most commonly performed major surgical procedure in women (30,000/yr in Australia). Internationally, only about 25% of hysterectomies are still performed through an open abdominal approach, compared to 40% in Australia. This means that too many women in Australia will suffer unnecessary side-effects, pain and long recovery, keeping them away from their family and usual tasks longer than necessary.
Endometriosis affects up to 10% of reproductive aged women causing a range of debilitating symptoms including pelvic pain and infertility. Our team has discovered that small nerve fibres can be found in the endometrium of women with endometriosis that are not present in women without the condition. We will investigate how these nerve fibres grow and the mechanisms of pain generation. This will potentially allow the development of more targeted and effective treatment modalities.
Australia has an ageing population and women spend around one third of their lives after menopause. Optimising physical and emotional health at menopause is a national health priority, and improving the health of women will improve health for the community. This research program is targeted at improving physical and mental health for midlife and older women. Findings will be translated into changes in policy and practice which improve the lives of women in Australia and worldwide

Summary
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a hidden burden affecting 50% of all women. POP is the herniation of the uterus, bladder and/or bowel into the vagina causing incontinence and sexual dysfunction. POP results from injury to pelvic tissues during childbirth. Reconstructive surgery used to treat POP often fails. We aim to develop an innovative cell-based therapy using a woman’s own mesenchymal stem cells combined with novel scaffold materials that will regenerate the damaged pelvic tissues.
