Biology and evolution of intracellular parasitism. This project will investigate the development of intracellular parasitism in environmental amoebae. The outcomes of this work will help to understand the mechanisms by which bacteria have evolved to survive inside cells and in some cases cause disease.

Young males are over-represented in road crashes. Part of the problem is their proneness to boredom, a hardwired personality factor that can lead to risky driving or distractions. This project aims to design innovative ubiquitous computing technologies that make safe driving more stimulating and pleasurable. This research will inform the future design of personal ubiquitous devices that pose a threat to road safety, by replacing the stimuli from risky driving with safer stimuli and simulating risk to increase risk perception when it is actually not present. This project aims to reduce risky driving behaviours, and, in the process, advance our knowledge about the role of boredom in the road safety context.Read moreRead less

Designing augmented eating interfaces to promote mindful eating. This project aims to develop and test novel augmented eating interfaces in order to address the contradiction between the concept of mindful eating (no distractions) and the reality of screen cultures (eating with screens). This project aims to develop and test novel augmented eating interfaces in order to address the contradiction between the concept of mindful eating (no distractions) and the reality of screen cultures (eating with screens). Eating while watching screens can be problematic because it can cause overeating, which can manifest into bigger health concerns such as obesity and heart disease. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the field of human-food interaction. It presents two new augmented eating systems and a socio-technological study of these systems in use within Australian households. The expected outcomes include a framework on how to design interactive systems that encourage mindful eating without compromising the pleasures of screen-based media and the eating experience, and a greater theoretical understanding of how to support mindful eating in everyday practice.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate humans' cooperation with automated systems by conceptualising joint intention awareness. This project expects to generate knowledge about a new cooperative driving behaviour model for automated vehicles, utilising a transdisciplinary approach that mixes human-centric methods with deep learning techniques. Intended outcomes are new joint intention awareness theory, new interface for automated vehicles, new methodology for cooperative behaviour research, and enhanced research capacity. The expected significant benefits are for automated systems to become more predictable, acceptable, readable and safer to use by everyday people.Read moreRead less

The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate innovative interaction and visualisation approaches that allow the insurance sector to include social media and crowdsourced data in risk identification and assessment. This data, combined with traditional risk assessment information, offers time-critical insights into emerging hazards and threats. The study aims to deliver methods and tools to crowdsource data from contributors through sensing and active sharing, as well as novel interaction and visualisation approaches to aid in the analysis of the resulting data. The project intends to benefit both the insurers and the insured by making non-traditional data sources available for risk assessment and prevention.Read moreRead less
What is killing the honeybees? The role of RNA viruses. This project aims to determine if the Varroa mite, the most important parasite of honeybees, selects for virulent strains of RNA viruses. This project aims to determine if the Varroa mite, the most important parasite of honeybees, selects for virulent strains of RNA viruses. Before Varroa’s inevitable arrival in Australia, this project will disentangle the effect of Varroa and the bees’ immune system on the evolution of virulence of bee viruses. Australia’s honeybees are Varroa-naïve and don’t carry virulent viruses. There is a known association between Varroa and colonies dying from viruses; however, it is not known what is cause and effect. This project will clarify Varroa’s exact role in the evolution of virulence in RNA viruses. The intended outcome is increased knowledge allowing the design of an effective treatment to prevent the death of honeybee colonies.Read moreRead less
The identification of Mycosphaerella graminicola effectors that promote pathogenicity on wheat. Fungal diseases are one of the greatest challenges to sustainable wheat production in the 21st century. Septoria tritici blotch is one such disease as it inflicts millions of tonnes in yield losses per annum. This project will identify the molecular basis of Septoria tritici blotch and assess its potential as an Australian biosecurity threat.
Scalable Visual Analytics for Uncertain Dynamic Networks. Technological advances have provided a data deluge over the past few years, and have led to many large uncertain and dynamic network models. This includes terrorist networks, marketing networks, facebook networks, various biological networks, and software engineering structures. Human understanding of such networks is difficult. This project aims to provide new methods for visual analysis of large uncertain dynamic networks such as these. ....Scalable Visual Analytics for Uncertain Dynamic Networks. Nucleomodulin effectors of the environmental pathogen Legionella. This project aims to examine the evolution of Legionella as an intracellular organism and the mechanisms by which the bacteria evade environmental predation by amoebae. Aside from the advancement of knowledge, expected outcomes of this project include a greater understanding of amoebae. This will provide significant benefits, and this knowledge may be used to develop inhibitors of amoebae growth.
