This project aims to explain the rising international cooperation between nationalist populists in democracies across the world. It expects to generate new knowledge about how and why these forces now work together to oppose common targets such as multilateral institutions, free trade and liberal democracy. Expected outcomes of this project include a sophisticated, evidence-based understanding of the dynamics and effects of contemporary nationalist populist cooperation. Given Australia's commitment to promoting good governance and strong democratic institutions, in addition to the interest overseas nationalist populists have shown in helping likeminded movements in Australia, the project will provide significant benefits for policymakers.Read moreRead less

This project aims to examine the emerging digital practices of authoritarian regimes, generating new knowledge on authoritarianism through qualitative methods that are underused in cybersecurity research. It proposes to determine whether such ‘digital authoritarianism’ is a new and distinct phenomenon, or rather the transposition of offline authoritarian practices into the online space. Expected outcomes include enhanced understanding of technology’s impacts on autocratic agendas and generating data that supports effective national security policy. This should create benefits such as (1) furthering knowledge on authoritarianism and (2) supporting evidence-based policies to respond to the authoritarian cyber threat.Read moreRead less
The Politics of Rights: Australia in Comparative Perspective. Australia tends to be left out of comparative rights studies, and accounts of rights protection tend to be focused upon courts and legal rights. There is no comparative study available that shows how well Australia protects rights, nor does there exist a detailed national study that shows how rights are protected in Australia by parliamentary means and the political mediation of international rights norms. This project will deliver both, enabling a fuller understanding of Australian rights protection. It will also boost comparative knowledge of rights protection via political means. Read moreRead less

Imagining globalisation: The world and nation in Chinese Communist Party ideology. Since the late 1990s, there has been intense interest in globalisation among leaders and theorists of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). These debates on globalisation represent an important development in the Party's ideology and provide an insight into the way in which it formulates its claim to legitimacy. This project will analyse these debates in the context of the Party's ideological history, and from the perspective of Western globalisation theory. The project will be of benefit to those institutions and individuals needing to understand changes in China's political elite's perception of the world and the Chinese nation's position within it.Read moreRead less
Expanding the Sovereign State System: 1648-2015. This project seeks to expand our understanding of the nature of conflict, political development and political order. How has the international system influenced political development and the nature of conflict? Knowledge on this topic has been hampered by a Eurocentric conception of the sovereign state, and the resulting quantitative research excludes numerous non-Western states and is biased toward the European experience. By using a culturally-neutral concept of the state, and by pushing the study back in time and across space to include states in the pre-1816 period and non-European regions of the world, the project aims to examine patterns in territorial conflict across differently structured international systems, how state genealogy affects political development, and how international order has varied regionally.Read moreRead less

Ideas, institutions, and society over the long run. Recent financial crises have often had powerful political consequences, including political turnover, rising polarisation and social unrest; but these consequences also vary greatly across countries and over time. In a novel investigation of the political aftermaths of financial crises over two centuries, this project will develop a comprehensive understanding of the causes of this variation. Its theoretical significance lies in its investigation of time-dependent processes that have been largely ignored by existing literature: what shapes the duration of political effects, how are societal expectations about government policy responsibilities (re)shaped by financial crises, and how do such expectations affect political and policy outcomes?Read moreRead less

National/community benefits arise from improved design, delivery and evaluation of professional development programs for parliamentarians, thereby enhancing their central constitutional roles in making laws, approving budgets and holding government policy and administration to account. This innovative cross-disciplinary project generates theoretical and practical understanding concerning the duration, content and learning modes of parliamentarians' professional development programs. Australian assistance programs to parliaments in the Pacific will have improved design, delivery and evaluation and be more effective in improving parliamentary performance, national governance and enhanced political stability in Australia's region.Read moreRead less
