The amygdala is a region of the brain involved in assinging emotional salience to our sensory world. Disorders of amygdala function lead to a range of anxiety related disorders. In this grant we aim to understand the neural circuits that are invovled in one form of learning that engages the amygdala - fear conditioning.

Summary
Consistent with Cancer Australia and PCFA priorities, in preclinical studies we will evaluate triple therapy for advanced prostate cancer.The three treatments to be tested together are adenoviruses, gene therapy and docetaxel, each of which has therapeutic potential individually. The combination should increase therapeutic effiacy and decrease the doses required, thus reducing side effects and increasing quality of life. Results obtained should enable translation to a clinical trial.
The superior colliculus is a brain centre which uses visual information from the eyes and other sensory information, such as sound, to direct the head and eyes towards objects of interest. This project will use current advancements in optogenetics to activate connections to this brain region in order to understand its role in coordinating head and eye movements. This will advance our understanding of how the brain collects and processes visual information to subserve behavioural functions.

Obesity is associated with the development of metabolic diseases, however, it is becoming clear that it is where the excess fat is stored that is more important when predicting the health risks associated with obesity. This project aims to identify whether adipocyte progenitor cells, which eventually become fat cells, are ‘preprogrammed’ and whether differences in these cells explain the generation of either healthy or unhealthy fat in different locations of the body.

The treatment of cartilage damage is a major problem in orthopaedic practice. The use of a 3D scaffold may overcome many challenges associated with cartilage and bone repair and regeneration. The aim of this research is to culture bone and cartilage cells into a prefabricated scaffold which may then be tested in an animal model. The results of this research may offer a new method of treating post-traumatic and osteoarthritic defects.
