Summary
Smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity, poor diet, and obesity are among the most important risk factors of chronic disease. While research has identified a number of effective interventions to address these risks, most have not been designed to be implemented in the community. Furthermore, little research has been undertaken to identify effective methods to achieve large-scale implementation of effective interventions. My fellowship seeks to address these issues.

Summary
People who have had a stroke are at increased risk of having another stroke. Secondary stroke prevention is a neglected area of post-stroke care and the uptake of research evidence is poor. Barriers to evidence integration can include problems with the evidence and difficulties at the health professional and/or consumer level. This research will seek to understand the barriers and develop strategies to reduce the gap between evidence and clinical practice in secondary stroke prevention.

Summary
Many health care interventions shown to be effective and cost-effective under controlled conditions are consistently under-utilised or mis-used in resource poor settings, especially by the most deprived groups. Over the next 4 years I will establish a program of health economics and health services research to improve the delivery and financing of health care interventions to ensure everyone reaps the benefits of medical science and health technologies and not just those who can afford it.
