Infertility is common and although IVF is widely accepted, the procedure is expensive and is associated with health risks. Using laboratory animals, we have made significant advances towards developing new technologies that can mature eggs and produce embryos in vitro, but without women receiving hormone injections. This project will seek means to combine the benefits of two of our existing technologies into one integrated system, to provide hormone-free infertility treatment.
A New Target For Allergic Inflammation: The Sphingolipid Pathway
Funder

Funding Amount
$588,617.00
Summary
Collectively, allergic diseases contribute immensely to the burden of health care in Australia. Notably, allergic reactions are symptomatic responses to a normally innocuous environmental antigen. Allergic diseases include asthma, hay fever, food allergy, anaphylaxis, insect sting and drug allergy. This project aims to understand the underlying mechanisms associated with allergic reactions such that it may aid in the identification of novel targets for the development of new treatments.

Identifying what to do demands integrating sensory information with our current physiological state and memory of past experience to select the best possible action. This is the action selection problem. Our project aims to discover how tiny insect brains solve this fundamental problem. The project combines neural recordings from animals exploring virtual reality, behavioural analyses and computational modelling. The expected outcome is a new understanding of the brain as an effective behavioural control system. This will benefit systems and comparative neuroscience. Our findings may also inspire solutions for robotic systems that must operate autonomously in remote and challenging environments such as disaster relief or exploration.Read moreRead less

This project will use intracellular electrophysiology, information content analysis and model development to decipher the underlying neural tuning mechanisms of hoverflies, which could suggest advanced computational optimisation and miniaturisation. The project may generate algorithms for rapid and reliable information extraction from large, noisy inputs, useful for developing unmanned vehicles and in Big Data analysis. The results could be useful in developing anti-collision control systems in vehicles using less computational power.Read moreRead less

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract affect a significant proportion of the Australian community. For example, asthma affects 12% of adults and amongst these, 15% waken weekly or more often with their asthma while 6% are hospitalized annually. There is a need to understand the basic mechanisms underlying these diseases so that new strategies can be developed to modify bronchocondtriction and inflammation. The project will provide new knowledge concerning the physiology of Zn in the respiratory epithelium and interactions between Zn deficiency and oxidants on injury in the respiratory tract. The usefulness of easily accessible nasal epithelial cells as a measure of Zn and Zn transporter levels deeper in the respiratory tract will be assessed. The project encompasses a number of fields and utilizes in vitro cellular and animal models, as well as tissues from human subjects.Read moreRead less

Network-based non-linear systems are widely used but face problems from non-linearities and networks. This project will establish a software-based nonlinear networked control system platform to test the presented algorithms and strengthen the scenarios in applications. This project is expected to increase Australian excellence in cyber-security and advanced manufacturing.Read moreRead less

Whether a human catching a ball, a dog leaping at a frisbee or a dragonfly hunting prey amidst a swarm, brains both large and small have evolved the ability to focus attention on one moving target, even in the presence of distracters. This project aims to investigate how brains solve this challenging problem by recording the activity of dragonfly neurons that selectively attend to one target whilst ignoring others. The project aims to examine how expectation and attention are encoded in the brain and will build an autonomous robot using computational models bio-inspired from this neuronal processing. Robots capable of visually perceiving and interacting with targets in natural environments have applications in health, surveillance and defence.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop and implement a systematic approach, both analytic and computational, to extract compact, accurate, system level models of complex physical and engineering systems. The wide ranging methodology is to construct computationally efficient "wrappers" around fine scale, microscopic, detailed descriptions of dynamical systems (particle or molecular simulation, or partial differential equations or lattice equations). Comprehensively accounting for multiscale interactions between subgrid processes among macroscale variations ensures stability and accuracy. Based on dynamical systems theory and analysis, this approach is expected to empower systematic analysis and understanding for optimal macroscopic simulation for forthcoming exascale computing.Read moreRead less
Unified framework of intestinal motility. The project aims to establish how a few fundamental mechanisms determine the large repertoire of intestinal motor patterns responsible for moving nutrients along the digestive tract. The project will combine experimental and theoretical data, with biomechanical and electrophysiological models to create a new understanding of this essential function of the body.
