Algorithms for geometric Turán-type problems and network visualization. Recent technological advances have large data sets, in a data deluge. Some of the most critical data sets are networks; examples abound in Systems Biology, Social Network Analysis, and Software Engineering. This project aims for algorithms to construct readable pictures of these networks, and thus make the data easier for humans to understand.

Eco-driving has been trialed as a cost-effective approach to reducing fuel consumption, but little research has examined its effects on safety. This research brings together disciplines of road safety, psychology and engineering to address the fundamental question: how can mobility be greener while being safer? It develops: a new theoretical model that optimises environmental and safety outcomes; new persuasive in-vehicle Human Machine Interface supported by cooperative Intelligent Transport System; and, comprehensive benefits evaluation. This research will bring major improvements to both road safety and energy use. Read moreRead less

The expected outcome will change ways of interacting with and thinking about information processing for all information systems. As Australian companies became larger and more global, the ability to view and analyse the growing amount of company information becomes crucial to aspects as varied as trouble shooting or new ventures and eventually to the very viability of the organization itself. The expected outcome will enhance this ability by providing an optimised global view and an effective navigation scheme of large graphical information spaces. This will attract leading international IT companies to use it for developing cutting-age tools, and will enhance significantly the capacity and international standing of Australian IT industry.Read moreRead less

Young males are over-represented in road crashes. Part of the problem is their proneness to boredom, a hardwired personality factor that can lead to risky driving or distractions. This project aims to design innovative ubiquitous computing technologies that make safe driving more stimulating and pleasurable. This research will inform the future design of personal ubiquitous devices that pose a threat to road safety, by replacing the stimuli from risky driving with safer stimuli and simulating risk to increase risk perception when it is actually not present. This project aims to reduce risky driving behaviours, and, in the process, advance our knowledge about the role of boredom in the road safety context.Read moreRead less

In this project innovative IT methods will be developed to assist biologists to solve complex and important biological problems. Many important applications in computational biology need very accurate and reliable tools for multiple sequence alignment and phylogeny reconstruction. Unfortunately, current existing tools are unreliable and are prone to serious errors when applied to large and divergent biological sequences. The success of this project will not only make significant contribution to the relevant research fields, but also help achieve goals in certain real-life biological research projects which are unique and important to Australia.Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop and test novel augmented eating interfaces in order to address the contradiction between the concept of mindful eating (no distractions) and the reality of screen cultures (eating with screens). Eating while watching screens can be problematic because it can cause overeating, which can manifest into bigger health concerns such as obesity and heart disease. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the field of human-food interaction. It presents two new augmented eating systems and a socio-technological study of these systems in use within Australian households. The expected outcomes include a framework on how to design interactive systems that encourage mindful eating without compromising the pleasures of screen-based media and the eating experience, and a greater theoretical understanding of how to support mindful eating in everyday practice.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate how emerging technologies can be leveraged to provide innovative ways for older adults to create and share their life stories to foster social wellbeing. Later life can be a time of considerable change, leaving people feeling disconnected from the people, places, and life events that are important to them. Autobiographical storytelling can help create links with one's past, but little is known about how technologies such as digital games and virtual reality can be used to enable older adults to share stories about their lives in a way that supports ongoing social interactions. This project is expected to co-design new forms of digital storytelling to improve social wellbeing of older adults. Read moreRead less
