Summary
Intermittent fasting (IF) is a nutritional strategy consisting of a period where food is freely available, followed by periods where food is withheld. This proposal will build on our past findings and assess the long term effects of IF on metabolic health, and weight in individuals with pre-diabetes. This study will have significant implications for informing current dietary practice, and provide a legitimate strategy to managing the metabolic sequelae of obesity.

Summary
At current rates, over two thirds of Australians will be overweight by 2025, and a third will develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. Meanwhile, elderly Australians and those requiring intensive care admissions are at risk of debility from under-nutrition. Our Centre links scientists in the laboratory with clinical researchers to develop nutritional solutions to a number of major diseases, and has the expertise to apply these in the community.
It is clear that the rate of obesity is increasing dramatically. Better therapeutic strategies are required to treat this debilitating disease. In this study we will determine the effects of sugary drinks on the amount of food eaten and subsequent changes in weight gain. By understanding how sugary drinks affect rates of weight gain we will be able to formulate better strategies to combat obesity.

Summary
It makes sense that good nutrition should help with healing of pressure ulcers, yet there is little evidence of what type of diet or nutritional supplements, if any, can assist in pressure ulcer healing. This research program will investigate the value of different types of diets and nutritional supplements in the healing of pressure ulcers, in comparison with other forms of treatment and whether this is a cost effective approach.
Fat Sensing In The Gut: Role In Appetite Regulation In Health And Obesity

Summary
Dr Little has an international reputation for her research relating to the sensing of nutrients in the gut. During the next 4 years her goal is to establish herself as an independent researcher leading a team and program focussed on characterising the molecular and physiological mechanisms by which fat is sensed in the gut, and the role of these mechanisms in energy intake regulation in health and obesity. These insights are likely to result in more effective management strategies for obesity.
