Funding Amount
$763,409.00
Summary
Osteoarthritis (OA), commonly involving the knee joint, is a major public health problem worldwide. This Fellowship aims to reduce the burden of knee OA by research to improve patient outcomes through more effective and accessible conservative non-drug care that takes a biopsychosocial approach and emphasises patient self-management. It will also build research capacity in the field through training and mentoring early career researchers.
I am an aged care rehabilitation researcher seeking to minimise disability and prevent falls in large numbers of older people. I am particularly interested in the role of exercise in falls and disability prevention.

Summary
My research has established that exercise programs can prevent falls and enhance mobility in older people and those affected by a range of conditions. There remain important unanswered questions about the design and delivery of optimally effective and cost-effective physical activity programs. My proposed research program will address these with studies targeting the design and evaluation of novel interventions, implementation of proven interventions and population health approaches.
Stroke affects 1 in 6 Australians and often leads to lifelong disability. This Fellowship will support A/Prof Bernhardt to: 1) complete the world first, international clinical trial of very early rehabilitation for people with stroke (AVERT), which has the potential to reduce the global disability burden of this disease; 2) in a new acute exercise laboratory, complete studies that help refine existing early exercise interventions and 3) test new models of rehabilitation care that take advantage ....Stroke affects 1 in 6 Australians and often leads to lifelong disability. Funding Amount
$772,490.00
Summary
Humans have never been less physically active than in contemporary Western society. These studies will provide an evidence-basis to address the inactivity epidemic by laying the foundation for personalised and effective exercise prescriptions, to which people are more likely to adhere.
Fall Prevention In Older People And Those With Neurodegenerative Disorders
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$938,910.00
Summary
Falls are a major heath care problem for older people and clinical groups. This program of research will improve fall risk assessments and design and evaluate promising strategies for improving balance control and preventing falls in these groups.
This research program is aimed at finding effective prevention strategies for the important issue of falls in older people. It will: a) conduct studies to improve our understanding of fall risk in people with Parkinson’s disease and dementia; b) undertake a study to improve our management of dizziness; c) seek treatments for fear of falling, and d) evaluate home exercise interventions for older people at risk of falls and strength and cued walking training for people with Parkinson’s disease.
