Health behaviours are very important in the early detection of cancer, and they often determine whether a cancer patient will have a good quality of life after cancer treatment. The proposed research program aims to increase our understanding of how to improve health behaviours in order to be able to diagnose cancer as early as possible, and to develop interventions that will help patients to have the best possible care after cancer treatment.

I lead Australasia's largest research group improving physical/mental health in families of children with cancer. With this CDF, I will broaden my work across child illnesses and internationally. I will introduce novel programs into the clinic/community, ensure technologies are delivered safely and improve health psychology research. I will increase collaboration across diseases and support emerging researchers. Evidence from this CDF will directly inform future child health services and policy.

Summary
Research on psychosis has been focused on developing treatments for hallucinations and delusions. However, ‘outcome’ is multifaceted and must embrace functioning, and quality of life. A/Prof Cotton will develop models will comprehensively capture ‘whole person’ outcomes for people who have experienced psychosis. Understanding how the disease impacts on the individual will enable better service planning, and refinement and development of treatments for patients with psychosis.

My program aims to improve mental health and quality of life in families affected by paediatric cancer. The program covers three themes: 1) Trial of novel behavioural medicine interventions to prevent poor mental and physical health outcomes; 2) Discovery of the psychosocial impact of genetic technologies for young people affected by cancer; and 3) Evaluation of the impact of paediatric cancer on under-researched, but critical, facets of family life.
