Whole Body Vibration For Osteoporosis: Shaking Up Our Treatment Options
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$961,017.00
Summary
Our aim is to examine the ability of vibration alone and in combination with osteoporosis drugs to reduce hip fracture in postmenopausal women. In Australia, 1 in 2 women >60yrs, will sustain an osteoporotic fracture. Only drugs notably decrease fracture; however none are entirely effective and some patients don’t respond. Whole body vibration has emerged as a potentially effective therapy. A combination of vibration and drugs may enhance the effects of both and revolutionise treatment.
The Role Of Osteocytes In Particle Induced Osteolysis
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$457,196.00
Summary
Hip replacements often fail due to the loss of adjacent bone. Metal or polyethylene particles are produced as the prosthesis bearing surface wears but how do these particles lead to bone loss? Our work suggests involvement of osteocytes within the bone mineral, which are increasingly understood to drive bone physiology and pathology. We will explore the role of the osteocytes by examining their response to particles, which may identify a new target to prevent particle-induced bone loss.
Determining The Impacts Of Epigenetic Modifying Drugs On Germline Programming And Offspring Health
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$863,918.00
Summary
New drugs have been developed that inhibit specific enzymes that regulate epigenetic pathways in cells. These pathways significantly affect growth and development in offspring and may represent a risk to future children of patients taking the drug. This project will determine these risks and provide data for developing clinical guidelines for safe use of the drugs.
Targeting Bone Marrow Lesions To Find Interventions In The Progression Of Osteoarthritis
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$467,395.00
Summary
It is essential to elucidate the underlying cause(s) of osteoarthritis because our current level of understanding of this condition has failed to produce effective treatments. Lesions in the bone under the cartilage (BMLs), seen using MRI, have strong potential value for the objective monitoring and management of OA. However, because the nature of BMLs is not well understood, the aim of this application is to perform a comprehensive study of BMLs in OA bone.
Development Of Site-specific Predictive Assay For Periodontal Disease Progression Using Mass Spectrometric &RT- PCR Anal
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$150,000.00
Summary
In this project new DNA-based technology will be developed to determine the numbers of specific bacteria in the dental plaque of patients. The project will also use new mass spectrometric analysis techniques for the determination of compounds in gingival crevicular fluid, an exudate from the gums. These two techniques will be used in a clinical trial to determine if periodontal (gum) disease progression can be predicted by changes in the numbers of bacteria or in the composition of gingival crev ....In this project new DNA-based technology will be developed to determine the numbers of specific bacteria in the dental plaque of patients. These two techniques will be used in a clinical trial to determine if periodontal (gum) disease progression can be predicted by changes in the numbers of bacteria or in the composition of gingival crevicular fluid. This could provide insight into the development of periodontal disease and lead to new preventive and treatment regimes.Read moreRead less
Glycosyltransferase Effectors Of Enteropathogenic E. Coli And Salmonella
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$320,891.00
Summary
This project aims to characterise the mechanisms of disease caused by bacterial pathogens including Salmonella and enteropathogenic E. coli. These pathogens cause a significant amount of diarrhoeal disease and mortality worldwide particularly in infants and in countries where water sanitation is poor. I aim to investigate the specific mechanisms the bacteria employ to manipulate and avoid our immune response during infection in order to better understand and combat diarrhoeal disease.
Impact Of Extreme Prematurity Or Extreme Low Birthweight On Young Adult Health And Well-Being: The Victorian Infant Collaborative Study (VICS) 1991-92 Longitudinal Cohort
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$725,496.00
Summary
Significant advances in medical care have increased survival of the tiniest and most premature babies. Those who have benefited from modern medicine are now in their mid-20s. We know they have more problems in childhood and adolescence compared with those born full term. However, we know little about their health problems in adulthood. This study will inform us of adult health problems in this vulnerable group and provide vital information about the best care for this increasing group of adults.
Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain For Restoring Vision
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$1,555,864.00
Summary
This project is focused on the clinical demonstration of the Monash Vision Group’s ‘Gennaris’ cortical prosthesis or bionic eye. The clinical work will demonstrate the use of the Gennaris as a viable medical device that provides useful vision to people with adult-onset profound vision loss in their everyday living environments. This will place MVG in a position to attract funding from investors or commercial partners to perform multi-site clinical trials and obtain regulatory approval.

The aim of the proposed research is to investigate the internal energy efficiency in the brown coal fired power stations by modelling the internal energy flows to reveal the potentials in the 'waste' heat streams in the power stations, and to assess new waste heat recovery measures for the power industry. The proposed research, supported by the entire Victorian power generation industry, will help the industry to achieve their green house gas emission reduction target set by the Federal Government.
