Investigation of the biology of insulin-like growth factor 1 and its derivatives for the development of new therapeutics. This project will investigate the biology of insulin-like growth factor 1, a key molecule in growth, development and, in particular, the wound healing process. Its success will lead to improved treatments for non-healing (chronic) wounds and, potentially, new anti-cancer treatments.
Machineries that maintain mitochondrial architecture. This project aims to define and characterise the protein machines that give mitochondria their characteristic shape in different cellular tissues. Innovative approaches involving gene editing and quantitative proteomics with molecular cell biology will be employed. This project expects to generate new knowledge in protein-mediated membrane shaping and mechanisms by which signaling occurs across multiple membranes. Innovative approaches involving gene editing and quantitative proteomics with molecular cell biology will be employed. This project expects to generate new knowledge in protein-mediated membrane shaping and mechanisms by which signaling occurs across multiple membranes. The project outcomes should include enhanced capacity for fundamental cell biology research in Australia. The project anticipates the contribution of new tools for structural biology, benefiting therapeutic and biotechnology applications and the training of young researchers in frontier technologies.Read moreRead less
The importance of exosomal membrane composition in intercellular signaling. Exosomes, microvesicles secreted by cells, are powerful signaling organelles. This project will explore the similarities and differences between the exosomal and host cell membrane. Membrane molecules exclusively present in exosomes may have important signaling implications and can aid in the uptake/fusion of exosomes by/with target cells.
A microfluidic approach to study the mechanobiology of ageing blood vessels. This project aims to study the effect of the stiffening of ageing arteries in endothelial cells. It explores the changes that occur in endothelial cells using a unique microfluidic technology with tuneable wall stiffness to mimic the biophysical and biochemical properties of ageing arteries. The expected outcome is the identification of the cellular mechanisms that control endothelial responses to arterial stiffening. This should provide the fundamental knowledge required to assist in the development of new therapies to tackle age-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease and dementia.Read moreRead less
Development and use of novel technologies to improve drugs targeting G protein-coupled receptor complexes involved in disease. The purpose of this project is to develop and use new and innovative technologies to improve many of the drugs taken for a wide range of medical conditions. The expected outcomes are the discovery of better drugs and a greater understanding of the drugs currently on the market, particularly enabling improved management of side-effects.

Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. The prestigious journal Nature Methods named super-resolution fluorescent microscopy as the Method of the Year 2008. This recognition is justified because fluorescent imaging on the molecular scale will revolutionise biological sciences. It will literally change the way we see the smallest building blocks of life and this allows researchers to identify the function of proteins and lipids in health and disease. This breakthrough technology is currently not available to researchers in Australia. Super-resolution fluorescence microscopy would extend Australia's leading position in the fundamental biological sciences, bio- and nano-technologies as well as imaging and microscopy.Read moreRead less
A new Src, PKCdelta and Akt regulated protease activated receptor system in metastasis. In contrast with localised cancer which can often be cured, curative treatment is generally not possible for cancer that has spread. This project will characterise a protein that drives the spread of cancer and to develop new approaches to treat patients at risk of developing these aggressive tumours that spread to other organs.
Molecular mechanisms regulating Ca2+ channels formed by Orai and STIM proteins. Store-operated calcium channels play a central role in the functions of all animal cells. They participate in generating the cellular responses to hormones, antigens, growth factors and other physiological stimuli. The aims of this project are to elucidate cellular mechanisms that regulate interaction between the molecular components of store-operated calcium channel, Orai and STIM. Using techniques of electrophysiol ....Molecular mechanisms regulating Ca2+ channels formed by Orai and STIM proteins. Using techniques of electrophysiology and molecular biology we expect to answer a fundamental question how STIM and Orai proteins interact to form functional store-operated calcium channels, and how the expression of STIM and Orai is regulated.Read moreRead less
Mitochondrial biogenesis in mammalian cells. This project aims to understand the inner workings of a molecular machine involved in mitochondrial protein biogenesis. Mitochondria are essential organelles that provide the bulk of cellular energy. Genesis of the organelle relies on the coordinated synthesis and transport of both proteins and lipids that make up the organelle. This project plans to define the architecture of the molecular machine, outline how its components function, and explore the ....Mitochondrial biogenesis in mammalian cells. This project plans to define the architecture of the molecular machine, outline how its components function, and explore the relationship between proteins and lipids in mitochondrial genesis. These results are expected to provide knowledge about how mitochondrial creation is regulated.Read moreRead less
