The Fellowship aims to reveal the underlying processes of plate tectonic cycles, paleogeography, sea-level change and the formation of ore deposits and hydrocarbon resources since the explosion of life during the Cambrian period. Using a mantle convection framework, we will discover how the cyclicity in mid-ocean ridge creation and the subduction dynamics associated with the aggregation and dispersal of Gondwana and Pangea has been driving plate tectonic cycles and cyclicity at the Earth's surface. A Virtual Geological Observatory will transform our understanding of this ancient world by fusing geodata-mining and high-performance computer simulation outputs in the plate-tectonic context.Read moreRead less

New directions, new problems and new data types in statistical science. Statistically challenging problems today involve answering many more questions than we have data. Solving them will elucidate the causes of diseases such as cancer, and provide better security for the community. The project will develop new methods for tackling these challenging problems, taking statistical science in new directions.

Under the hood: single-molecule studies of multi-protein machines. Living cells are filled with complex protein machines that are responsible for the molecular processes supporting life. This project is aimed towards the development of physical tools that enable the study of these protein complexes at the level of single molecules. This project aims to study the protein machinery responsible for DNA replication, the process of duplicating genomic information before cell division. By making real-time single-molecule movies of the replication process, this project aims to unravel the molecular mechanisms of this important process and provide the knowledge required to understand disease mechanisms and catalyse drug development.Read moreRead less

Responding to the challenges of identity change: an advanced social identity approach to issues of leadership, health and well-being. This project develops an integrated framework for understanding how changes to identity that are associated with the changing fabric of the modern world impact on Australians' health and well-being. The project will develop and test strategies for tackling these challenges and minimising their negative consequences.

Macromolecular design for bio-imaging and targeted delivery. A thorough understanding of how nanoparticles interact with biological systems is imperative if advances are to be made in using nanotechnology for therapeutic applications. Fundamental aspects of nanoparticle transport, targeting and cell uptake will be investigated. This project aims to design novel nanoparticulate systems for the delivery of both an endogenous signalling molecule and genes to cells. The project aims to inform future optimal design criteria for bespoke nanoparticle delivery systems.Read moreRead less
