Improving The Health And Development Of High Risk Preterm Newborns

Summary
Preterm children have more health and developmental problems than those born full term. Although we know the problems faced by those tiniest and most immature, more questions remain. What problems do they face as adults? What new treatments are available to improve their outcomes? Are the more “mature” preterms at risk as well? My research program aims to address these questions through the efforts of the Victorian Infant Collaborative Study team, a large research team that I lead.
The Who, Why, What, Where And When Of Primary Youth Mental Health Care: The 5W Research Program
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$857,288.00
Summary
headspace has been an international pioneer for primary mental health care for young people. However, we need to better understand how to match the range of services headspace provides to the diverse needs of its clients. In the 5W research program, we will use a range of big data techniques, machine learning, data linkage, discrete choice experiments and economic modelling to develop an acceptable, equitable and efficient stepped care model for headspace.

Despite the introduction of a number of treatment options to combat the problem, the management of dependent heroin use has proved problematic. This application addresses an issue of considerable importance and controversy in recent years, namely, the impact of naltrexone and methadone treatment on morbidity and mortality among persons who are heroin dependent. The study will be carried out using a unique system of linked hospital records from the Western Australian Health Services Research Linkage Unit at the Department of Health Western Australia (DHWA). Through this system hospital, mental health and death records derived from different sources, but related to the same individual are electronically linked. Hence, record linkage provides an independent method for obtaining information on treatment outcomes which is free from subjective bias. In the current study records from heroin users who entered naltrexone maintenance and a smaller group who entered methadone maintenance will be linked to the DHWA database. Collectively these data will be used to quantify morbidity, hospital episodes, mental health issues and mortality in heroin users following commencement of naltrexone maintenance treatment. Data will also be used to compare positive and negative outcomes for individuals on naltrexone with those on methadone. The results will be used to advocate on behalf of this vulnerable population in a country that prides itself on universal access to high quality health services. It is anticipated that this study will have a substantial beneficial impact on the management of illicit drug use policy and as well as contributing new research methods, findings and international knowledge.Read moreRead less
Caring For Clinician Health And Wellbeing; Protecting Patients From Harm
Funder

Funding Amount
$1,281,125.00
Summary
Doctors and other clinicians care for the health of others but their own health can also suffer. In turn, unwell clinicians may place patients at risk of harm. My research will analyse ten years of data from the Medical Board and other regulators, interview clinicians who have had a serious illness, and work with international experts to develop solutions. Together, this work will help hospitals and regulators to better protect the health of clinicians and safeguard patients from avoidable harm.

Suicide is the second commonest cause of death by injury in Australia. Suicide prevention is an important public health priority but rates remain high. People who have previously attempted suicide are most likely to kill themselves. Most suicidal people attend emergency departments where they get inadequate treatment for their psychological and social problems and remain depressed and suicidal. This project will test the effectiveness of a new psychological and social treatment to reduce the depression and link suicidal people with community supports. If successful, this treatment could be provided in any emergency department and help decrease suicide rates in Australia.Read moreRead less
Improving management decisions in mental health care through applications of advanced simulation modelling. Evidence to inform management decisions about the best way to structure mental health care services is currently lacking. This project will develop a simulation modelling tool that will allow managers to explore various service configurations in virtual reality, enabling predictions to be made about the cost and quality of care.
Investigating The Relationships Between Cannabis And Other Drug Use, Mental Health, Early-life Factors And Life-course Outcomes: Integrative Analyses Of Data From Four Australasian Cohort Studies
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$292,097.00
Summary
The current study will be the first of its kind to use integrative data analyses _ a highly innovative approach _ to pool data from four large and long-running Australasian cohort studies to better understand the link between cannabis use and later-life outcomes. Dramatically improved knowledge of these relationships will create a clearer picture of the interventions required to reduce the harms associated with cannabis use.

The South West Healthcare Area Mental Health Service ( Warnambool) has demonstrated according to key performance indicators, an effective system of service delivery. This evaluative research project seeks to identify key components within the organisational structures and processes of a rural mental health service that contribute to these effective outcomes for clients. The research process will test these key components against other rural and urban mental health services in Victoria and will result in the development of a model for rural mental health service delivery of both local and national significance.Read moreRead less
