Understanding and implications of formation of lipid nanostructures in milk. This project aims to deliver new understanding of the processes of milk digestion. This project aims to deliver new understanding of the processes of milk digestion. Milk is the most important food for human survival, providing all the essential nutrition to newborn infants and constituting a major part of the adult diet. The recent discovery that nanostructure is formed during the digestion of both cow and breast milk, but not of vegetable 'milk', has opened a large number of questions to answer in this project. Specifically, the project plans to link nanostructure formation in milk with composition during digestion, and the subsequent delivery of nutrients. The project plans to use synchrotron and microscopy techniques to address these questions. Project outcomes may improve our understanding of digestion and drive innovation in products delivering nutrients to infants.Read moreRead less
Towards New Functionality in Dairy Ingredients. The Australian dairy industry plays a significant part in the nation’s economy, with almost $3 billion in export revenue in 2016-2017. Powdered dairy products extend shelf life and ease of transport, with >20% annual growth in premium products, such as milk protein concentrates and infant formula powders. This project aims to support the development of value-added dairy powders by investigating the impact of a novel high pressure processing technology in enhancing the properties of dairy powders and/or introducing new functionality. Successful outcomes will help expand the offering of high value dairy ingredients and thus increase the global competitiveness of Australian dairy manufacturing.Read moreRead less
The role of the transcription factor Runx2 during mammary gland development and lactation. This proposal will further our understanding of mammary gland development and lactation and the mechanisms controlling mammary cell fate decisions such as differentiation. Regulation of cell fate lies at the core of most aspects of cell biology from normal development to dysfunction such as cancer. The knowledge gleamed from this project also has the potential to make economic gains for Australia by increasing the profitability and ensuring the sustainability of both the dairy and meat industries. Better understanding of the mechanisms controlling mammary epithelial cell differentiation should enable augmentation of lactation such as increasing milk protein content, using marker assisted selection (of targets such as Runx2) in cattle.Read moreRead less

This project will aim to uncover the reasons why Australia's Information Technology industry is ranked low among OECD countries by evaluating the impact of global and urban geography of the sector on the sector's performance. It will show how policies to achieve more advanced IT sector development need to consider Australia's distinctive position in the global economy and particular factors in the Sydney and Melbourne IT clusters that both help, and hinder, development in ways not considered in present policy models.Read moreRead less
Emotional Behaviour in England, 1930-1980. My aim is produce a study of emotional behaviour in England. This will be a contribution to the expanding history of gender and of the self. The project will demonstrate the importance, in terms of insights into cultural change, of recovery of previous emotional standards. Additionally it will test the claims that have been made about governmentality in the twentieth century.

Neighbourhoods are critical contexts for health, safety and well-being. In the face of significant urban growth, understanding and enhancing neighbourhood networks and cohesion are high priorities in Australia and internationally. Drawing on longitudinal survey data from 148 Brisbane suburbs combined with census and spatial data, this project will be the first to examine how a neighbourhood's physical and socio-structural context influences neighbourhood networks and cohesion over time and across the landscape of an entire city. The project aims to advance scientific understanding of neighbourhood networks and cohesion, provide unique insights into its underpinning drivers, and inform urban policy.Read moreRead less
Co-designing Innovations in Digital Storytelling with Older Adults. This project aims to investigate how emerging technologies can be leveraged to provide innovative ways for older adults to create and share their life stories to foster social wellbeing. This project aims to investigate how emerging technologies can be leveraged to provide innovative ways for older adults to create and share their life stories to foster social wellbeing. Later life can be a time of considerable change, leaving people feeling disconnected from the people, places, and life events that are important to them. Autobiographical storytelling can help create links with one's past, but little is known about how technologies such as digital games and virtual reality can be used to enable older adults to share stories about their lives in a way that supports ongoing social interactions. This project is expected to co-design new forms of digital storytelling to improve social wellbeing of older adults. Read moreRead less

The project intends to address a major deficit of knowledge about the ways financial centres develop and compete among a network of international centres. Australia’s long-term economic future is closely tied to providing financial services throughout Asia. Yet very little attention has been given to analysing the structures and networks that enable internationalisation, in particular the performance of Sydney and Melbourne as competitive financial centres within a network of financial centres in East and South-East Asia. Using specialist industry databases and intensive case study methods, this project plans to examine the processes underpinning the growth of this network, map scenarios for the next two decades, and advise on policy implications arising from the 2013–14 Financial System Inquiry.Read moreRead less
Tracing modes of infrastructure financing and their effects on cities. Urban infrastructure is seen to be in crisis. In response, cash-strapped governments defer increasingly to private financiers and operators. This project assesses the changes required of infrastructure to meet the expectations of private finance. It will also assess how infrastructure items are being transformed as modes of finance move from one city to another.

The rapid growth of circular mobility (temporary overnight absences from home) for work and leisure reflects newly emerging spatial relationships that trigger massive flux in local populations. This project will: develop new measures that capture the unique dimensions of this movement (frequency, duration and seasonality); show how circulation in Australia varies over time and space; develop model profiles; quantify local impacts; and propose means to accurately estimate service populations. The results will have direct practical application to local authority planning, place the study of circulation on a rigorous analytical footing and enhance international understanding in a field largely neglected hitherto.Read moreRead less
