Applications for large format video surveillance are about to grow rapidly, starting with military applications and then moving into the civilian arena, highlighting the importance of compression for interactive dissemination, so as to make best use of limited communication channels. This project will develop an innovative representation for motion and depth/elevation maps, which addresses a key obstacle in the deployment of technology for efficient interactive access to large format video and geospatial imagery. These applications are relevant to Australia's defence and infrastructure for smart information use. Moreover, this is a strategic proposal to strengthen Australia's existing lead in aspects of interactive media dissemination.Read moreRead less

Safeguarding classified electronic communications is of major national importance. This research, into security evaluation of computer software, is supported by the Defence Signals Directorate, which verifies the security of communications devices used by Australia's government and armed forces. As such devices become increasingly sophisticated, traditional security evaluation techniques have become unacceptably difficult and costly. Hardware evaluation techniques, based on tracing paths through circuitry diagrams, have proven unsuitable for software evaluations. Consequently, devising new tools and techniques for information security evaluation of embedded computer software is essential for preserving Australia's national security.Read moreRead less
Stochastic Construction of Error Correcting Codes with Application to Digital Communications. Modern society would be unrecognisable without error correcting codes; mobile telephones, storage devices such as DVD's and high speed data communications simply would not exist. Yet most theoretical results on error correcting codes are asymptotic in nature and ignore computational complexity issues, that is, they are not representative of many real life situations. By building on recent breakthroughs in statistics and stochastic optimisation, this project will develop algorithms for designing optimised error correcting codes subject to realistic finite data length and computational complexity constraints. Successful outcomes will lead to enhanced data communications and storage, greatly benefiting industry and consumers alike.

Adaptive Modulation For OFDM Signals. The sub band Signal To Noise Ratio in an OFDM communications channel varies by as much as 30 dB. In order to optimise the bandwidth efficiency of OFDM signalling it is desirable to adapt the chosen modulation technique such as M-ary QAM to the SNR available in sub bands. In this way high quality channels transmit the highest bit rates, whilst low quality channels accommodate the lowest bit rates. The net result is that the capacity of the communications link ....Adaptive Modulation For OFDM Signals. Distortion effects in satellite amplifiers have a serious impact upon communication system performance, for example, by increasing the error rates.
The research study we are proposing involves analysing these distortion causing non linear effects and designing techniques to compensate for them. Although we are initially interested in the nonlinear satellite channel, we intend the results to be extended to other difficult nonlinear channels such as will be present in future 3G and 4G mobile communication systems.
The proposed research will place Australia at the forefront of cutting edge Information Technology and Communications research.

In a number of emerging applications in communications, manufacturing and defence, various dynamical systems are measured and controlled by transmitting feedback over digital communication channels. In such situations, the often limited data rate available for transmissions can have a significant negative impact on the overall objectives. This proposal aims to develop techniques for analysing and designing such systems, and to delineate the fundamental limits to their performance. This has the potential to contribute to a greater understanding of the behaviour of many real systems which combine communications and control in feedback loops.Read moreRead less
