Funding Amount
$952,328.00
Summary
Melanoma is one of the most frequent cancers in Australia. Its growth depends on the rpoper delivery of nutrients and oxygen through blood vessels. This requires the formation of new blood vessels as the tumour grows. In this project we intend to understand the origin of the blood vessels that form in tumours and identify the stem cells that support them. We will use proof of principle experiments to determine whether removal of these stem cells allows the regression of melanoma tumours.
Australian Centre For Research Excellence In Aboriginal Sexual Health And Blood Borne Viruses

National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$2,496,848.00
Summary
Despite efforts to improve sexual health and blood borne virus outcomes for Aboriginal people over the last twenty years, this area lacks national coordination, has critical research gaps and requires a boost of research capacity to address the burden of diseases. This CRE will address research gaps, using novel, multidisciplinary methods and using unique research translation methods to ensure policy and practice benefits from the CRE outcomes.
A reduced capacity to recover balance following an imbalance episode contributes to the high incidence of falls in older adults. The goal of the present study is to determine how age-related differences in lower extremity neuromuscular and biomechanical properties are related to balance recovery capacity and falls incidence. A detailed understanding of this relationship is necessary for the development of efficacious exercise-based interventions for the prevention of falls.
Exploring Scanning Ultrasound (SUS), A Novel Method To Treat And Prevent Neurodegenerative Disease
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$765,708.00
Summary
We developed a novel scanning ultrasound (SUS) protocol that clears toxic protein aggregates and restores memory function in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), without the need for therapeutic agents. Here we aim to determine whether SUS has preventative potential, whether there are synergistic effects, and whether a therapeutic antibody combined with SUS leads to an enhanced therapeutic outcome. Together this will guide the development of an ultrasound therapy in AD patients.
EXAMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATRIPTASE-2 AND HEMOJUVELIN, TWO ESSENTIAL REGULATORS OF IRON HOMEOSTASIS
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$533,541.00
Summary
The control of iron levels is important in health and well being. Too little can lead to iron deficiency and anaemia, conversly too much can lead to haemochromatosis and tissue damage. We will examine the role of two proteins, matriptase-2 and hemojuvelin that when mutated cause iron deficiency or iron overload respectively. We will study how these proteins interact and work in opposite directions to control iron levels. The results will help to develop new therapeutics for iron disorders.

Shock-wave turbulent-boundary-layer interactions occur on hypersonic flight vehicles and can lead to high heating and increased drag. This is a paramount design issue that needs addressing. We aim to understand and quantify fundamental phenomena occurring in such interactions using state-of-the-art instrumentation and wind-tunnel facilities. Surfaces will be heated to realistic flight temperatures to simulate accurately the flight environment and include effects not reproduced with cold models. The effects of 3D features of the interactions will lead to new understanding of how the flow develops through a combination of experiments and numerical simulations. Future designs of hypersonic flight vehicles will benefit from knowledge gained.Read moreRead less
Molecular Regulation Of Metabolism And Body Composition By Ski Via Crosstalk With Nuclear Hormone Receptor Signalling.
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$558,441.00
Summary
Obesity is a common and burdensome health problem in the community which leads to diabetes and heart disease. A number of factors, including hormones play important roles in determing risk of obesity. This study proposes to investigate whether the Ski gene which is a regulatory factor for many hormones affects metabolism in transgenic mouse models of altered Ski function. The proposed studies may identify Ski as a target for therapy for obesity and improvement in sketal muscle metabolism.

This project aims to develop a real-time, calibration-free, low-maintenance ammoniacal nitrogen monitoring system to assist in optimised wastewater treatment control. This project expects to generate new knowledge in the area of sensing technology using a self-developed membrane-based analytical principle, which overcomes the challenge of directly and accurately determining ammonia in a harsh wastewater environment. Expected outcomes include new theories in membrane-based sensing techniques and a market-ready field-based ammonia analytical system. This should provide significant benefits, such as a new technology for optimising wastewater treatment and reducing emissions and a valuable analytical tool to safeguard effluent quality.Read moreRead less
