Summary
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and motor neuron disease (MND) are fatal and incurable neurodegenerative diseases. Although dissimilar in symptoms, most cases of both FTD and MND are characterised at autopsy by abnormal accumulations of the TDP-43 protein in neurons. In this fellowship, I will characterise the biochemical changes caused by TDP-43 malfunction that occur in both FTD and MND and test potential new therapeutics in mice, to identify new ways to treat these devastating diseases.

Summary
Motor neuron disease (MND) is a group of fatal adult-onset diseases affecting the neurons that relay signals from the brain to muscles. The incidence of MND is rapidly increasing due to the ageing population and a diagnosis of MND comes with a prognosis of paralysis and 2-5 years survival. The diagnosis process is lengthy, and even after MND is confirmed, there are no effective therapeutics. This research project aims to develop new therapeutic and diagnostic options for MND.

Summary
My research has identified key components of our immune system, that can worsen disease in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and motor neuron disease. I hope that exploring these components in animal models, and patients suffering from these diseases, my group can identify new therapeutic drug candidates that can be progressed in clinical trials. Ultimately, this may lead to new treatments to reduce disease burden in patients suffering from these neurodegenerative conditions.

Summary
This fellowship will provide new insight into the molecular processes underlying onset and progression of common brain conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and motor neuron disease. Furthermore, new therapeutic targets for these diseases will be developed and tested in model systems, to facilitate future translation into clinical application, and to overcome the lack of treatments.

Summary
This project aims to identify the role of immune and inflammatory components in the pathology of neurodegenerative disease. Additionally, this research will determine whether a new class of novel anti-inflammatory drugs can alter the neurodegenerative process. This will allow for an increased understanding of the biology of neurodegenerative disease, and also may lead to the development of new treatments for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease and motor neuron disease.
My research is focused on understanding the aetiology of brain disorders. I am interested in the interaction of genetic and environmental factors in the development of these disorders. In particular, I will evaluate the validity of rodent models for schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease and investigate the therapeutic potential of the endocannabinoid system for both disorders and whether environmental enrichment (e.g. physical exercise) can have beneficial effects in these models.
