Summary
Brain and spinal cord injury are major causes of death and disability, with degenerative diseases similarly affecting large proportions of the population. The singular objective of my research proposal is to increase our understanding of the molecular and cellular processes by which nerve cells respond to trauma and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and to identify new therapeutic approaches aimed at encouraging the repair of damaged cells.
The Function And Modulation Of Dendritic Activity Underlying Neural Circuits And Behavior

Funding Amount
$450,641.00
Summary
Understanding how brain cells translate sensory input into behaviour is central to explaining how the brain works. My research focuses on the long-standing question of how information from different brain regions is received and processed within individual brain cells. This research is crucial to understanding brain function and can provide a greater understanding of the neuronal processes underlying diseases such as epilepsy, schizophrenia, depression and alcoholism.
This research will elucidate pathways in the brain that control satiety, in particular the role of neuropeptide Y and the satiety hormones peptide YY and pancreatic polypeptide. By understanding how satiety is controlled, this process could be stimulated for potential use as a novel treatment strategy for obesity or anorexia.
The Ethics And Politics Of Pharmaceutical Innovation And Translation

Funding Amount
$476,728.00
Summary
I lead a research program on the ethics and politics of pharmaceutical innovation and translation: how medicines are developed, regulated, funded and taken up into practice. I aim to help policymakers to deal with conflicts among stakeholders. Over the next 4 years I will conduct a suite of research projects on topics of immediate significance to Australian policymakers; develop a new framework for pharmaceutical ethics and create a “Pharmaceutical Ethics and Politics Network.”
