Summary
Epstein-Barr Virus and Human Cytomegalovirus are common viruses present in more than 50% of the adult population. They have a major impact on the human immune system, stimulating large numbers of T cells that are essential to control the persistent viral infection. Generally, these viruses cause few problems; however, an unfortunate minority suffer major life threatening clinical problems. There has also been some evidence for a role of EBV infection in the pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis.

Summary
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is the prototypic condition of a group of types of inflammatory arthritis called 'seronegative spondyloarthropathies'. These conditions are the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in white populations and occur worldwide. One third of the risk of developing AS is determined by genes within a region called the 'major histocompatibility complex' (MHC), in addition to the gene HLA-B27, the main gene causing AS. We aim to identify the remaining MHC genes.

Summary
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common inflammatory arthritis which causes primarily back pain and stiffness, and affects 1-250 individuals. Our group identified association between tagging genetic markers in the gene IL23R and AS, and our preliminary data suggests some related genes are involved as well. This study aims to identify the key genetic variants involved and determine the mechanism by which they cause AS.

Humans evolve slowly, pathogens and cancer evolve quickly. Unsurprisingly, our immune systems often lose this arms race and we irreversibly succumb to disease. Catastrophically, >26 million people are lost every year to the these causes. This project will use a new technology to rapidly advance the evolution of human immune receptors to construct a class of super-receptor. These super-receptors may prove decisive weapons in the fight against cancer and infectious disease.

There is no cure for multiple sclerosis (MS), but a person's genetic make-up can influence their susceptibility to developing MS and the symptoms of their condition. Knowing more about these MS genes will help to a) provide better advice concerning a person's risk of developing the disease or their prognosis b) in the design of new treatments. This project aims to identify 'MS genes in a region of the human genome call the HLA complex.
