Platinum is becoming increasingly crucial to the high technology sector, and is used particularly in catalytic converters and fuel cells, which serve to minimise or eliminate car exhaust pollution. Greatly expanded resources of this precious metal are needed to help society's transition to a low carbon dioxide (CO2) lifestyle. This project will combine high temperature-pressure experiments with geological field research to greatly improve our understanding of how platinum ore deposits form and thus where to find them. The outcomes of this project will change mineral exploration strategies in Australia and around the world, and facilitate our progression to a cleaner, greener future.Read moreRead less
The Geochemistry of the Platinum Group Elements, Copper, Rhenium and Gold in Granitic Rocks. Many of the World's largest copper and gold deposits derive their ore fluids from crystallizing granitic magmas. These elements, together with the platinum group elements, are sequestered by immiscible sulfide melts, which when they precipitate from a magma, control the subsequent evolution of these elements. Many of the World's largest copper and gold deposits derive their ore fluids from crystallizing granitic magmas. These elements, together with the platinum group elements, are sequestered by immiscible sulfide melts, which when they precipitate from a magma, control the subsequent evolution of these elements. The proposed study takes advantage of platinum's remarkable affinity for sulfides to identify onset of sulfide saturation and then monitor its effect on the subsequent evolution of copper and gold in the evolving magma. It is expected to provide new insights into chemistry of copper and gold in crystallizing granitic melts and explain why some granitic systems are ore bearing and other are not. Read moreRead less

Many of our largest ore deposits, such as those at Mt Isa and Broken Hill, formed in paleo- environments equivalent to the active submarine volcanic arcs which we are proposing to study. Modern systems yield the vital clues to explore intelligently for fossil equivalents. We propose a two-pronged approach in world-renowned analytical and experimental laboratories to understand active processes that will guide experimental simulations under controlled conditions. Results are critical for national economic advantage and the maintenance of Australian Earth science in the forefront of global research effort.

Sulfide Partial Melting at Broken Hill: Process and Implications. Based entirely on experimental studies, we suggested that the sulfide ore at Broken Hill, N.S.W., partially melted during granulite-facies metamorphism. Our subsequent discovery of sulfide melt inclusions in silicates associated with the ore strongly supports this assertion. This proposed research will evaluate the extent of melting and the composition of such a melt as well as the effect of this melt on the rocks surrounding the ....Sulfide Partial Melting at Broken Hill: Process and Implications. Our subsequent discovery of sulfide melt inclusions in silicates associated with the ore strongly supports this assertion. This proposed research will evaluate the extent of melting and the composition of such a melt as well as the effect of this melt on the rocks surrounding the ore. The results of this basic research will not only impact on Broken Hill genetic models specifically, but could profoundly effect our understanding of metamorphic and magmatic sulfide deposits globally.Read moreRead less

We propose to establish a world-leading centre for the study of the elemental and isotopic composition of key environmental, archaeological and mineral samples. This will be based upon ultra-short wavelength laser ablation and speciation methods, combined with new advanced ICP-MS technologies developed in Australia. This will give the centre unrivalled capabilities and allow new areas of research to be undertaken in global climate change, the impact of increased salinity and pollution on the sustainability of Australia's inland waterways and coastal environments, and the history of the first humans who inhabited Australia. This will provide a baseline and new quantitative measures to better plan for an environmentally sustainable Australia.Read moreRead less

Ore deposits and petroleum are important for economic and social areas of Australia's growth. New discoveries are needed to maintain Australia's wealth as mines reach the end of operations and petroleum supplies decrease. This project will demonstrate how ore fluids and hydrocarbons interact in the geological environment. It should, therefore greatly expand the conceptual framework in which to explore for both mineral and hydrocarbon resources, particularly in old, deep and hot basins, which are considered to be the last frontiers of exploration. Outcomes concerning the nature of early life will be of global interest.Read moreRead less

High-temperature, high-pressure, water-rich fluids play a central role in many geological processes. However, these fluids are extremely difficult to characterise: although their effects are evident in many rocks, the fluids themselves are too reactive to be preserved. Here several novel techniques are described for studying the compositions and thermodynamic properties of hydrous fluids and silicate melts over a wide range of geologically relevant conditions. The results of this study will greatly improve the understanding of geological processes as widely diverse as volcanism, ore deposition and metamorphism.Read moreRead less
