Summary
This project is aimed at better understanding transmission of P. vivax, the world’s most widely spread malaria parasite. Using a newly established experimental platform that enables us to feed P. vivax infected blood to Anopheles farauti mosquitoes, we can start researching factors in human blood that determine P. vivax infection success, test new vaccine and drug candidates for their ability to block transmission and thus significantly advance science surrounding this neglected parasite.

Summary
There is a clear need for new therapies for psychiatric illnesses, particularly depression. Current antidepressant therapy is useful but leaves many with a shortfall to functional recovery. My research program investigates new therapies for depression, in the context of the biological understanding of depression.
Airway scarring, or airway fibrosis, is a pathological process by which the airway tissue is progressively replaced with scar tissue. This change makes it difficult for people to breathe. I have developed novel in-vitro models which enables us to understand why fibrosis is occurring, and in my research fellowship I aim to uncover new ways of treating fibrosis in lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Summary
All the information to form an adult is contained in the DNA of the fertilized egg. Development is achieved by turning genes on and off, controlled by proteins called epigenetic modifiers. Sometimes this fails, leading to disease. Despite their vital role, we have data on just 20% of the potential epigenetic modifiers in humans. I will use novel screen-based technology to find hundreds more, to enable us and others to characterise the role of epigenetics in normal development and disease.

This research will further our understanding of the mechanisms that give rise to the development of Chlamydia within a cell and how it causes disease, ultimately providing targets for drug-vaccine design. This project will also design and evaluate epidemic control strategies to inform policy makers for reducing the incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted infections. These applications are addressed by developing mathematical models, biophysical theory, and statistical analyses.

Summary
Pancreatic cancer claims five Australian lives every day and is one of the nations most lethal diseases. Despite aggressive treatment regimes, there has been no improvement in patient survival in the last decade. Evidence suggests that targeting cancer cells alone is not enough. The intense stromal reaction inhibits drug delivery and increases the aggressiveness of the tumours. Thus, depletion of the stroma or pancreatic stellate cells is a potential therapeutic target.

This Career Development Fellowship will use the analysis of existing (and continuing data collection), and key health data linkages to improve understanding of the outcomes of injury survivors and factors contributing to outcomes. The outcomes of this research program will be improved injury burden estimates, and better health outcomes for trauma survivors through informing evidence-based clinical guidelines and trauma care delivery.
My research team is focused on human parasites of major relevance to the Australian water industry and/or global public health. Our primary focus is the use of advanced technologies to improve understanding of these parasites and to utilize this information to underpin development of new drugs to treat them and novel diagnostic tests to improve their control.
