Managing age in organisational context: a comparative study of the meaning of age among managers. Australians are currently being encouraged to work longer to maximise their contribution to the economy but they often report there are organisational barriers to doing so. This study offers a new approach to understanding age focusing on managers and offers a framework of effective strategies for employers in managing age.
Low carbon transition in the Australian energy sector. This project aims to investigate the Australian energy sector’s responses to low emission pressures, comparing the role of different actors in the transition, and developing a model explaining the political dynamics of the transition. The project will provide policy-makers and industry leaders with the means to develop innovative policies and support best practice to assist Australia’s transition towards energy competitiveness. This project ....Low carbon transition in the Australian energy sector. The project will provide policy-makers and industry leaders with the means to develop innovative policies and support best practice to assist Australia’s transition towards energy competitiveness. This project expects to provide significant benefits such as new insights into the potential for a low emissions future for Australia.Read moreRead less
Risk and Change In Institutional Fields: The Case Of Industrial Chemicals. This project aims to explore how to manage risk through sustainable organisational strategies and institutional transformations. Chemical risks arise as by-products of economic and technological progress and can cause untold harm to human health and the environment. This project aims to explore how to manage risk through sustainable organisational strategies and institutional transformations. Chemical risks arise as by-products of economic and technological progress and can cause untold harm to human health and the environment. Using a discursive approach to compare how organisations in Australia and Canada manage chemical risks, this project aims to show how organisations can act as institutional entrepreneurs and introduce sustainable field-level solutions to risk, instead of relying on government regulation to deal with dangerous chemicals. The intended outcomes include the development of a model that identifies the challenges associated with three different risk scenarios – managing established risks, managing emerging risks and eliminating risks – as well as identifying and evaluating strategies to address these challenges.Read moreRead less
Price Transparency, Search, and Collusion in Markets. Online search platforms and 'open data' policies are emerging to empower consumers with price information for decision-making in markets, yet also can enable collusive pricing. This project aims to study the competitive impact of search platforms by combining large, real-time datasets on firm pricing and consumer search with natural and field experiments. Online search platforms and 'open data' policies are emerging to empower consumers with price information for decision-making in markets, yet also can enable collusive pricing. This project aims to study the competitive impact of search platforms by combining large, real-time datasets on firm pricing and consumer search with natural and field experiments. The project expects to facilitate the development of new models of collusion, consumer search, and platform adoption. This should yield substantial benefit by modernizing competition policy for the digital age through novel data-driven screens for collusion, and policies to encourage platform adoption and enable consumers’ use of data in decision-making to increase competition in markets.Read moreRead less
An Australian Program in Precision Flavour Physics. Particle physics is a breakthrough scientific endeavour, addressing fundamental questions about the nature of the laws that govern the Universe we live in. Through engaging in appropriately chosen collaborative experiments at the cutting edge of the field, Australian science can make leading contributions to a deepening understanding that flows from discoveries in this area. Excellent training of young Australian researchers, enhancement of public interest in science, and fostering of international cooperation and networking are all outcomes which this project will provide.Read moreRead less
Partial equity ownership and knowledge transfer: An economic analysis of strategic alliances. Since 1997, 5462 cases of equity strategic alliances have been identified within Australia. In 2003, the ACCC rejected a proposal by Qantas and Air New Zealand to enter into such an alliance on the grounds that it would be highly anti-competitive. Under what conditions should the Government allow or prevent the formation of equity strategic alliances? Since 1997, 5462 cases of equity strategic alliances have been identified within Australia. In 2003, the ACCC rejected a proposal by Qantas and Air New Zealand to enter into such an alliance on the grounds that it would be highly anti-competitive. Under what conditions should the Government allow or prevent the formation of equity strategic alliances? Under what circumstances can such alliances benefit consumers and society? This project addresses these questions by systematically exploring the link between equity ownership and knowledge transfer. It will contribute to the effective operation of the Australian economy by proposing comprehensive guidelines for antitrust agencies to analyse welfare consequences of equity strategic alliances.Read moreRead less
A programme to study quarkonium-like states at ATLAS. Particle physics, the study of the fundamental building blocks of matter, has pioneered the use of large collaborations --- hundreds of scientists working in dozens of countries --- to solve difficult research problems. Australian groups have contributed to several such experiments, studying cosmic rays, neutrinos, and broken symmetries, as well as developing ATLAS, a vast experiment dedicated to understanding the origin of mass. This project seeks to use ATLAS for a new purpose: searching for exotic mesons. Our existing commitment to ATLAS provides an opportunity to develop this as a new avenue of fundamental research in this country.Read moreRead less
Leadership diversity through relational intersectionality in Australia. This project aims to investigate leadership in contexts characterized by the complex intersection of cultural and gender differences - what is called here ‘relational intersectionality'. The expected outcomes will contribute to the development of new theory on leadership diversity, and a means through which that theory can be leveraged through leadership practice and education. The project will inform methods to better man ....Leadership diversity through relational intersectionality in Australia. The expected outcomes will contribute to the development of new theory on leadership diversity, and a means through which that theory can be leveraged through leadership practice and education. The project will inform methods to better manage the increasing diversity of the Australian workforce and enable improved leadership performance.Read moreRead less

Australia participates actively in the frontier field of high-energy particle physics to understand the fundamental building blocks of matter, their origins and interactions. This field excites the best minds in the scientific world and provides excellent training. To maintain our position in this field we must continue the development of the powerful instrumentation required for high-energy experiments. This project will satisfy that role. The application of particle detector expertise to state-of-the-art X-ray imaging detectors for the Australian Synchrotron and medical imaging is a perfect example of fundamental science tools applied to other fields. Australian Synchrotron experiments stand to gain much.Read moreRead less

Summary
Support for the Australian Experimental High Energy Physics Program. High energy particle physics studies the most fundamental constituents of matter. This microscopic frontier requires the highest energy and highest intensity particle accelerators. Through the Big Bang Model, high energy physics also sheds light on the development of the very early Universe. It is thus crucial for the understanding of nature at the very largest of scales as well as the very smallest. The ATLAS and Belle experime ....Support for the Australian Experimental High Energy Physics Program. Through the Big Bang Model, high energy physics also sheds light on the development of the very early Universe. It is thus crucial for the understanding of nature at the very largest of scales as well as the very smallest. The ATLAS and Belle experiments probe two of the most significant questions in fundamental physics: what is the origin of mass, and why do we live in a universe composed of matter rather than antimatter? This proposal seeks support to maintain access to the international high energy physics program in Europe and Japan.Read moreRead less
