The nature and consequences of environmentally-generated phenotypic variation in natural populations. The ambient environment can generate both heritable and non-heritable variation in individual traits, but the role of such variation in evolution is poorly understood. This project will use a powerful model organism, the Australian neriid flies, to elucidate the evolutionary implications of environmentally-generated variation.
Probing the structure of exotic mesons, at the Large Hadron Collider and beyond. Unexpected new particles, outside the bounds of current textbooks, present one of the most interesting puzzles in physics. This project will search for more of these particles at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and at new facilities in Japan and Germany that will change particle physics in the coming decade.
In search of the origin of mass at the Large Hadron Collider. This project will utilise new theoretical ideas and worldwide experimental efforts at the Large Hadron Collider with the aim to resolve one of the most profound mysteries of modern physics, the origin of mass in the universe. The results will have an important longstanding impact by promoting innovation culture and public education of science.
Explaining the dark matter small-scale crisis with spectral distortions. This project aims to explain the nature of dark matter and provide a solution to the so-called small-scale crisis. The "cold dark matter" model provides an excellent fit to observations of the universe on the largest scales. Yet, it appears to be in conflict with current understanding of how small structures such as dwarf galaxies form. This project expects to determine the distortions to the blackbody spectrum of the cosmi ....Explaining the dark matter small-scale crisis with spectral distortions. This project expects to determine the distortions to the blackbody spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons due to different solutions to this small-scale crisis. The expected outcome is to open an observational pathway to test these solutions with the future CMB observations. This project will provide significant contribution to both particle physics and astrophysics/astronomy, and will advance Australia’s knowledge base in fundamental science beyond the immediate goal of clarifying small-scale problems of cold dark matter.Read moreRead less

This program aims to harness the unprecedented power of CRISPR-Cas13 gene-editing technology to develop high-throughput tools to explore the role of RNA regulation in cell cycle control. This project expects to generate new knowledge about cell division and RNA biology by utilizing this new technology and applying interdisciplinary approaches. Expected outcomes of this proposal include new research tools capable of broadly addressing biological questions across multiple disciplines (e.g. from health to food production). This project intends to provide significant benefits, such as enhanced biological knowledge, multidisciplinary training opportunities and will build Australia’s capability in this rapidly expanding field.Read moreRead less
A community-based approach to the problem of underage drinking. This project will aim to reduce the frequency and amount of alcohol consumption, and alcohol-related harms, among young people aged 12-17 years by addressing social norms regarding underage alcohol consumption. Using a multi-component intervention it will engage the Illawarra community in strategies to encourage and empower young people not to drink.

Mental disorders such as depression are a major cause of disability. Improving mental health can increase productivity and workforce participation. However, the psychosocial quality of work is a factor that overlays the relationship between work and health. Poor quality work (for example, unreasonable time pressure, insecurity) increases the risk of poor mental health, absenteeism, and exit from the workforce. This project will analyse data following people over time to investigate the long-term health and employment consequences of poor psychosocial job quality, and consider the special case of mature age workers. It will identify those individuals at greatest risk, and factors that can buffer against the adverse effects of poor quality work.Read moreRead less
Nuclear and chromatin architecture in the replication stress response. DNA replication is an essential biological activity required for the transmittance of genomic material across cell divisions. DNA replication is an essential biological activity required for the transmittance of genomic material across cell divisions. If errors occur during DNA replication, this results in dangerous outcomes including mutation, genome instability, and cell death. Cells cope with challenges to DNA replication through a process called the replication stress response. This fellowship explores a newly discovered pathway in the replication stress response where changes to the architecture of a cell nucleus, and movement of the genomic material inside, promotes repair of genomic damage that occurs during replication. The result of this project will be an understanding of fundamental biological processes that protect human genomes.Read moreRead less
