Educating for health service reform: clinical learning, governance, and capability. The nurse practitioner is a rapidly growing, advanced practice nursing role with excellent client acceptability. This project will develop specialty competencies and a clinical learning and teaching framework that will be relevant for both nurses and other health professionals.
Patients' preference for participation in patient safety activities. This study will identify patient and nurse perceptions of involving patients in patient safety activities. Priorities for implementing strategies to support patient participation in patient safety activities will be identified, which will influence both health policy and practice.
Factors influencing learning in healthcare: reframing a conceptual model on workplace learning. This project will reframe a conceptual model on workplace learning in healthcare environments. The model will provide a more sustainable and innovative approach to teaching and learning for health professionals in this complex socio-cultural work environment.
Describing transition for people living with chronic illness. Our primary aim is to explore transition for people living with chronic illness. Understanding the nature of transition places health care professionals in an excellent position to assist the person living with chronic illness. This is important given that chronic illness has been acknowledged as the prime health concern of this era. Our primary aim is to explore transition for people living with chronic illness. Understanding the nature of transition places health care professionals in an excellent position to assist the person living with chronic illness. This is important given that chronic illness has been acknowledged as the prime health concern of this era. We explore, how individuals living with chronic illness make sense of "becoming ordinary" rather than "being ordinary", exploring how they give meaning to their sense of self and their sense of self capacity. As an interactive participatory action research program with 200 participants, we will validate the emerging transition thesis collaboratively. Resultant action has the potential to enhance participant's lives, foster collective community development, inform health care practice and advance theoretical debates.Read moreRead less
Strategies to improve heart disease outcomes in Australian women. Women are disproportionally represented in the older population and arguably suffer from social and economic disadvantage. This project will identify strategies to improve the heart health of women in Australia through forging an intersection between social and health sciences and developing targeted and tailored interventions.
The feasibility, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of nurse-led models of chronic disease management in general practice. This study directly relates to the National Research Priority of 'promoting and maintaining good health' through our approach to trial a new and innovative model of chronic disease management specifically for CVD and Type II diabetes in general practice. This study directly relates to the National Research Priority of 'promoting and maintaining good health' through our approach to trial a new and innovative model of chronic disease management specifically for CVD and Type II diabetes in general practice. This project aims to test a new model of health service delivery - that is, the use of a practice nurse to provide chronic disease care rather than a general practitioner. Our strategy involves collaboration with health providers, stakeholders and consumers to help achieve this by providing patient education and disease management through a registered nurse in general practice.Read moreRead less

An online collaborative design process is emerging in response to the global economy, increasing complexity of visual communication design projects and rapid developments in Internet technology. Research is required to identify and address the interdependence of various social, physical and technical factors that affect online design collaboration. The Omnium Project is an experiment that uses its unique framework to test online modes of interaction (physical) and collaboration (social) for visual communication designers. The outcome will produce an online technical-system and formalise a documented conceptual-approach for effective online collaborative design in visual communication.Read moreRead less
Preventing hospital readmissions and loss of functional ability in high risk older adults: A randomised controlled trial. Older people have higher rates of hospital admission and readmission due to complications and falls. Older people have higher rates of hospital admission and readmission due to complications and falls. During hospitalisation, many older people experience functional decline which impacts on their future independence. Acute hospital services comprise the largest section of health expenditure in Australia, costing $26,413 million/year. Prevention or delay of disease is known to produce more effective use of services. This study will compare the effectiveness of innovative strategies to prevent deconditioning, functional decline and hospital readmissions. Comparative analysis of these strategies will provide information with potential to reduce costs whilst improving functional status, psychosocial well-being and independence in older peopleRead moreRead less

Older people have significantly higher rates of hospital admission and length of stay than the general population and higher rates of hospital re-admission due to complications and falls. During hospitalisation, older people experience significant functional decline which impacts on their future levels of independence and quality of life. This research aims to design, deliver and evaluate an innovative model of discharge planning and in-home exercise-based follow-up for community-living frail older people at high risk of hospital re-admission as a means of promoting health. Results should delay occurrence of disease, reduce re-admissions, and improve functional status, psycho-social well-being and patient satisfaction.Read moreRead less

The design process of a building project establishes function, form and performance for the final building. When multiple participants from varying professions are involved there is a serious problem in coordinating, communicating, and locating information around each design decision. Establishing an ontology for this process, and using this ontology to structure all participant communication, will allow the requisite information from all participants to be considered for each design decision. This will greatly reduce rework and poor design decisions based on missed information. It will also ensure that participants are aware of all related information for their particular design tasks.Read moreRead less
