This project will provide fundamental insights via realistic mathematical models into two areas of technological importance in the development of certain advanced materials involving liquid crystals and biomembranes. The use of liquid crystal devices is ubiquitous in the design of optical display units. Biomembranes are of much current importance, in particular, in connection with sophisticated drug delivery systems. The design of advanced `smart' materials which admit solitonic behaviour is an area at the forefront of materials science and as such is important to the continued development of an advanced technological base within Australia.Read moreRead less
Noncommutative geometry in representation theory and quantum physics. One of the most important problems in natural science is to understand the structure of spacetime at the Planck scale. The Tutte polynomial of a graph: correlations, approximations and applications. The Tutte polynomial is a mathematical function of central importance to diverse fields of research, such as network reliability and statistical mechanics, that involve natural (and often difficult) counting problems. This project aims to obtain useful close approximations of this function with immediate applications in all these research fields.

The purpose of this project is to investigate the deep connections that have recently emerged between the study of an area of mathematical physics (quantum integrable systems) and subjects of pure mathematics (enumerative and algebraic combinatorics, and algebraic geometry). These connections have a common root, which this project plans to reveal using novel methods coming from quantum integrability. This approach is expected to illuminate these subjects leading to a new unified and interdisciplinary picture, and to resolve important open problems in the study of certain algebraic varieties and of their cohomology in the theory of symmetric functions, and related counting problems.Read moreRead less
Low-order dynamical models for non-linear fluid behaviour in quasi two-dimensional plasmas. Two complex systems in which a magnetic field imposes two-dimensional fluid motions are turbulent fusion plasmas and magnetospheric plasmas. Two complex systems in which a magnetic field imposes two-dimensional fluid motions are turbulent fusion plasmas and magnetospheric plasmas. A distinctive property of 2D flows is the inverse energy cascade, whereby energy streaming into large-scale vortices, coherent structures, or sheared flows gives a remarkable propensity for self-organizing behaviour. This can be exploited to govern or guide our response to such systems. We propose to investigate the dynamics of momentum and energy exchange in these plasmas, using reduced dynamical models and bifurcation and stability mathematics. Expected outcomes are improved prediction of magnetospheric substorms and confinement of fusion plasmas.

Energy, Cosmic Censorship and Black Hole Stability. Human progress is achieved by confronting fundamental questions, at the leading edge of knowledge. This project will lead to better understanding of space-time physics, and of the properties of singular solutions of non-linear hyperbolic equations. Such equations govern a wide range of physical phenomena, including fluid flow, weather and electromagnetic fields.

The concept of independence lies at the very core of the probability theory. Many attempts to establish the general notion of independence in noncommutative probability theory have led to only two examples so far: the classical (commutative) independence and the free one introduced by Voiculescu. Every other approach has failed to demonstrate the analogues of the key probabilistic results, such as the Law of Large Numbers and the Central Limit Theorem. There is an urgent need for new efficient methodology. This project aims to develop an approach to the independence in terms of mixed momenta and to find new examples of independence besides the ones mentioned above.Read moreRead less

This project aims at improving knowledge on probabilistic objects having applications in, for instance, mathematical-physics, statistical physics, quantum gravity and data science. In doing so, we expect to produce new mathematical results by building upon both classical approaches and innovative ones. In particular, on one hand, the extension of classical graphical methods will be developed and, on another hand, generalized probability theories will be used to provide new insights. The expected outcomes include a better understanding of the generic properties of quantum states. This should significantly benefit to mathematicians and physicists whose models use those objects and may impact the broader community of engineers and technicians.Read moreRead less
