Summary
Chemotherapy treatment and the natural ageing process leads to ovarian failure and infertility. For young cancer survivors, chemotherapy induced infertility is devastating, and like aged women, leads to hormonal changes that lead to osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and neurodegeneration. Here, a new class of molecules will be tested for their ability to prevent and reverse infertility folllowing chemotherapy treatment, and in old age. These findings will improve the healthy lifespan of women.
Understanding Immunosuppressive Pathways In Cancer

Summary
Cancer-induced immune suppression is a major obstacle to the effective treatment of many cancers. Suppression can be mediated by cells of the immune system, or cancers themselves. My project aims to investigate 3 suppressive pathways and determine their hierarchy in different mouse models of cancer using mouse genetics and antibody-based treatment approaches. Understanding these processes ongoing in the cancer environment will allow the design of more effective cancer therapies.
LINEs Of Mutagenesis, Selection And Evolution In Ovarian Cancer And Chemoresistance

Summary
L1 elements are powerful mutagens encoded within the human genome that becomes active in epithelial tumours. I will define the broad effects of L1 elements on the evolution of chemoresistance, focusing on ovarian cancer as a model system. Ovarian cancer is characterised by a poor 5 year survival rate of ~40% with most tumours developing resistance. Understanding the impacts of L1 on this evolution will inform the development and selection of more effective treatments for ovarian cancer.

Summary
Cancer is the second leading cause of disease burden in Australia. Much can be done to reduce this burden through effective cancer prevention and ensuring all patients receive optimal evidence-based care. This research focuses on thyroid, kidney and ovarian cancer and aims to increase knowledge of these cancers’ causes and to investigate variation in patient care and its impact on outcomes. Ultimately the objective of the work is to decrease Australia’s cancer burden.
