Access for Australian Researchers to Advanced Neutron-Beam Technique. Neutron scattering is one of the most powerful and important investigative tools in the study of materials. Australia has only a low-flux neutron source, HIFAR, which provides no cold or hot neutrons. This excludes large, important areas of science, such as functional films, polymers, self-assembly systems, biological materials, colloids and emulsions, and real-time in-situ studies.

The development of mass spectrometry techniques for mapping post-translational modifications in the wheat pathogen Stagonospora nodorum. The fungus Stagonospora nodorum is a significant pathogen of wheat causing in excess of $100 million dollars in yield losses per annum in Australia. This project will develop new analytical methods that can be used to detect important protein modifications in Stagonospora nodorum with the goal of securing Australia's wheat supply.

It is essential for Australia's long-term planning and security that the effects of global warming on our nation's water resources and coastlines are quantified. Sea level variations projected into the future vary around Australia and have large uncertainties, yet the impacts have substantial social and financial ramifications for our community.
