IMPROVING THE FOOD SUPPLY TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF NUTRITION-RELATED CHRONIC DISEASE
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$338,945.00
Summary
My project will examine the healthiness of the Australian food supply with the goal of identifying where reformulation activities will have the greatest impact on the health of Australians. The results will be used to inform policies designed to enhance the healthiness of the food supply, and will make a significant contribution to the understanding of dietary intake and the food supply in Australia, and will help reduce the ever-increasing burden of nutrition-related chronic disease.
Improving The Healthiness Of The Foods In Australian Supermarkets
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$318,768.00
Summary
This project proposes to better understand the role of supermarkets on influencing the healthiness of the food supply. Three studies are planned which evaluate the evidence for the effect of supermarket standards on the food supply, determine whether providing nutritional data to a supermarket can change the healthiness of their food products, and identify factors that influence the development and use of supermarket standards to improve their foods.
A Practical New Method Of Measuring Population Salt Intake
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$327,193.00
Summary
The World Health Organization has set a target for member countries to reduce salt intake by 30% by 2025. Key to this is measurement of population salt intake. Collection of 24-hour urine samples is the gold standard used to estimate salt intake but this method is burdensome. Collection of a single urine sample is an alternative method. This project will bring together all of the available data worldwide to assess the reliability of using a single urine sample to measure population salt intake.
Applying Active Hospital-based Case Ascertainment To Assess Vaccine Effectiveness And Safety

Funding Amount

Summary
Australia makes a considerable investment in vaccination, and the public are entitled to expect that vaccines are both safe and effective. The growing complexity of the vaccine schedule requires the development of new and flexible systems to monitor vaccine performance. This project aims to do this using surveillance nurses embedded in children's hospitals to actively find cases of diseases which are potentially vaccine-preventable as well as those which might have occurred as a side effect of v ....Australia makes a considerable investment in vaccination, and the public are entitled to expect that vaccines are both safe and effective. Investigating The Utility Of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Of Beta-lactam Antibiotics In Hospitalised Patients
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$215,887.00
Summary
The appropriate dosing of antibiotics for patients admitted to hospital is based on broad guidelines derived from studies in healthy volunteers or in patients that may have different types of infections. Minor changes in the clinical state of the patients can require significant dosing adjustments. The best way to guarantee appropriate antibiotic therapy is to individualize doses based on blood concentration data. We aim to determine the utility of dose adjustment in hospitalized patients.
Child maltreatment is a significant public health issue. This research will identify child, family and community risk factors which increase vulnerability to child maltreatment. Mental health outcomes for these children will be investigated, including the increased risk that children with disabilities have in experiencing maltreatment. International comparisons of trends will be conducted for maltreatment-related hospital admissions. These findings will inform child maltreatment surveillance, pr ....Child maltreatment is a significant public health issue. Advancing The Epidemiology Of Coronary Heart Disease: Reliable Monitoring, Secondary Prevention And Future Projections
Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
Funding Amount
$314,644.00
Summary
Coronary heart disease imposes a significant health care burden in Australia, and there have been major changes to the way in which this disease is diagnosed and treated. This project will develop a new method for accurate monitoring of the burden of coronary heart disease nationally, will assess the effectiveness of current drug treatments for people with coronary heart disease and estimate future rates of coronary heart disease in the whole population.
