Development and evaulation of novel foods enriched with very long chain omega-3 fatty acids. This project is a collaborative effort between Meadow Lea Foods, Clover Corporation, and the Universities of Wollongong and Western Australia. This project is a collaborative effort between Meadow Lea Foods, Clover Corporation, and the Universities of Wollongong and Western Australia. The aims are 1) to develop a range of functional foods enriched with omega-3 from tuna oil; 2) to see whether the recommended omega-3 intake, currently nor met by most Australians, can be achieved by including these foods in the diet; 3) to evaluate sensory and health attributes and other factors that may impact on consumer acceptability hence market potential of the food range. There is little evidence of the feasibility let alone health and social benefits of utilising novel foods to meet the dietary omega-3 recommendation. We expect a) to show how consumers could benefit by using a range of such foods in their customary diet; b) to critically set this achievement within the context of current social trends in food product development. Water at Hydrophobic Surfaces. The properties of water define the nature of life on this planet. When water encounters a hydrophobic surface - at the air/water interface, in contact with unreactive solids such as Teflon, or at an oil drop, our recent experiments indicate that the water dissociates more readily into protons and hydroxide ions - undergoes autolysis - than in bulk water. Furthermore, the hydroxide ions are preferentially adsorbed at the surface, giving it a negative charge. This pr ....Water at Hydrophobic Surfaces. The results will range across physics, chemistry, biology and their associated technologies, a consequence of the ubiquitous importance of water. Read moreRead less

achieve performance goals in the presence of constraints on the system variables. Receding horizon control is a strategy that addresses this problem by directly optimising performance under the appropriate constraints. This project will address theoretical and computational issues associated with this methodology. The expected outcomes include:
* New finitely parameterised solutions for nonlinear systems.
* Implementations of reduced computational complexity.
* New insights into analytical properties of the methodology.
These outcomes are expected to add to Australian scientific recognition and to bring significant economic benefit to Australian industry.

Aims: To carry out fundamental research on methods for understanding and solving inverse problems in signal processin, telecommunications and control. To translate these fundamental results into practical outcomes of importance to Australian Industry.
Significance: Signal Processing, Telecommunications and Control are core technologies for all modern societies. The research proposed here will generate new methods for designing and understanding key algorithms in these areas. Particular emphasis will be placed on difficult problems involving ill-conditioned inverses or those having hard constraints that must be satisfied.
Expected Outcomes: A prime outcome will be fundamental research results at the highest international level. This will be accompanied by top level refereed publications and books. There will also be direct and tangible benefits to Australian industry.Read moreRead less

This project aims to decipher the chemical complexity required to mimic the digestive behaviour of milk fats and to identify their influence on lipophilic nutrient activity during transit through the gut. The link between milk's complex fat composition and its nutrient delivery properties are unknown because the digestive colloidal structures that drive fat-soluble nutrient absorption are poorly understood. The project expects to identify which milk lipids are essential to milk’s role as nature’s nutrient delivery vehicle. It will also identify a universally-available nutrient delivery platform for resource-poor communities, and enhanced knowledge of lipid physical chemistry. The findings will promote greater interaction between the dairy and pharmaceutical industries, adding value to their respective products.Read moreRead less
