Concordant with the NHMRC priorities, this fellowship will principally focus on the development of novel therapies for mood disorders. Summary
Our aim is to understand how genes and environment combine to affect susceptibility to various brain disorders. We are using specific models involving human gene mutations associated with diseases, and manipulating environmental factors such as mental and physical activity. We are focused on neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Huntington’s disease, depression and schizophrenia. These efforts to understand brain diseases will facilitate development of therapeutic approaches.
My projects are associated with three research themes: psychological stress, obesity and hypertension. While these projects may appear diverse they are linked, both in terms of the significant co morbidity that they share, and that the underlying pathologies are initiated and sustained, at least in part, by disturbances in sympathetic nervous regulation. Testing And Delivering Early Interventions For Young People With Depression

This research is focused on testing new strategies to identify and treat severe forms of anxiety, depression and emerging bipolar disorder in teenagers and young adults. It works with ongoing data from over 4,000 young people seen at the Brain & Mind Research Institute and new youth services and other national data sets. It proposes that disturbances of the body clock underpin some major mood disorders and evaluates new behavioural and medical strategies designed that target the clock.

Schizophrenia and depression are devastating mental illnesses and a huge burden to society. Drug treatments can be beneficial, but many patients are either treatment-resistant or show severe side-effects. There is an urgent need for truly novel treatment strategies which should ideally prevent symptoms. The main aim of this project is to elucidate brain mechanisms involved in schizophrenia and depression development to inform clinical research about improved preventative treatment strategies.
