This project will reveal the origins of a phenomenon that is ubiquitous in modern western society. By doing so it will attract international attention from academic historians and sociologists. It will also contribute to Australia's reputation for producing high-quality intellectual products, and further enhance its standing as a leading centre for the study of Britain in the eighteenth century. Because of its contemporary relevance the study will provide a critical perspective on modern politics, especially the perception that governments legitimise their authority by helping to constitute popular anxiety about threats to moral and personal security.Read moreRead less

This project aims to produce a modern history of the ancient mega-continent Gondwanaland. An international team intends to reorient the history of geosciences towards the southern hemisphere by investigating geologists working in Australasia, South Asia, South America, Southern Africa and Antarctica since 1788. This includes analysis of how Gondwana fossils came to fuel the industrial age. The team also aims to explain how, why and with what effect the term 'Gondwana' has retained such strong cultural purchase, well beyond the geological domain. This should productively recast ideas of a global south and improve understanding of what ‘Gondwana’, and deep geological time, mean for societies across the southern hemisphere. Read moreRead less

This project explores links between Australia and India between 1880-1925 and posits that India and Indians provided a foil against which Australians operated as they forged their nation and an Australian identity. It explores links around trade, religion, tourism , travel and the development and operation of the White Australia Policy to demonstrate the 'Othering' of India, but also the circumstances where closer understandings developed. In exploring relations between two very different colonies it pioneers new aspects of imperial history. It reveals the virtually un-researched history of relationships between Australia and India and thus historicises Australia's place in the Asia-Pacific.Read moreRead less
The rule of law in history and memory: Australian and Canadian settler frontiers. This study is inspired by current 'History Wars' debates in Australia and Canada, which in raising questions about 'what happened' in the colonial past have demonstrated that the shape of the nation's historical memory is of vital present day importance. These debates have shown that more detailed historical research is required into how the frontiers of European settlement evolved in practice, and how Indigenous populations were made subject to colonial legal authority. As a project of comparative history, the study is of international as well as national significance. It has the potential to generate improved understanding of current conditions by highlighting differences and similarities between Australian and Canadian experiences.Read moreRead less

This project will provide a comprehensive and novel analysis of intimate relationships amongst the Scottish lower orders between 1661 and 1830, filling a gap in the European/Anglophone research on the emotional lives of the poor. It will use an innovative methodology to access emotions amongst a group who did not leave traditional 'feeling' sources, such as letters and diaries, to create a picture of their emotional and familial world. Its novel methodology will supply a model for doing similar work in other contexts, while its insights into how this group formed families, and used emotions in that process, will provide historical data that can inform social policy and strengthen Australia's social and economic fabric.Read moreRead less

This project seeks to recover and reassess the general history of English law during the seven decades following the Glorious Revolution of 1688–89, when limited monarchy, parliamentary government and the rule of law became new constitutional norms for an emergent imperial British state (and, eventually, for Australia). It aims to chart the modes of law and governance variously experienced, created and used by lay men and women, husbands, wives and children, as well as by judges, lawyers, legislators and ministers. The results of this conceptual investigation, which aims to re-interpret the history of English law and government in the broadest possible way, is planned to appear as Volume IX in the Oxford History of the Laws of England series.Read moreRead less
