A RESEARCH NETWORK PROPOSAL ON THE BIOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND PRIMARY CARE DYNAMICS OF AGEING
. Australian ageing research is dispersed across bioscience, social science and primary care organisations. Advances in healthy, productive ageing require connection of these three vital links. Bioscience and social science groupings are engaged in generating the evidence that primary care experts need to promote healthy ageing. Primary care experts also need to act as ?direction finders? for research on ageing so that the right questions are addressed. All these groups are relatively under-funded and poorly connected. The HA-PI Network will connect and support them to over-come barriers to the implementation of existing research and to create innovations for the future.Read moreRead less

This program aims to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes, whilst providing a supportive environment, to better the health of the Martu people though the provision of activities and services and strengthening of partnerships between service agencies and the local community. By developing the Indigenous workforce and building the community capacity to self-manage health, a reduction in the discrepancy in health indicators between Indigenous and other Australians can be achieved. The findings from this research will provide important information regarding methods to provide for better health for Indigenous Australians and develop a template for intervention design in other remote communities.Read moreRead less
The efficacy of a physical activity intervention in the management of psychological and physical symptoms among breast and prostate cancer patients. The vastly improved survival rates for breast and prostate cancer in recent years has resulted in an ever-increasing number of people living with a history of cancer. Treatment for cancer is often associated with negative side effects like fatigue, depression and sleep disturbance, and an overall impaired quality of life.

The vastly improved survival rates for breast and prostate cancer in recent years has resulted in an ever-increasing number of people living with a history of cancer. Treatment for cancer is often associated with negative side effects like fatigue, depression and sleep disturbance, and an overall impaired quality of life.
This project will assess the effectiveness of a physical activity program in alleviating these symptoms of treatment. The program will include regular walking and gentle resistance strength training.
The outcomes from the project will advance research by shedding light on which symptoms are most helped by physical activity, and how much activity is needed to gain these benefits.

The burden of chronic disease in Australia has resulted in prevention of chronic disease being an important priority for the Australian health system. High quality evidence for preventing chronic disease exists; however the practice falls short of the evidence. Finding ways to implement the evidence for preventing chronic disease is an urgent national need. This study aims to apply the evidence for preventing chronic disease in practice. It will generate data and validate a model on how to effectively improve the uptake of guidelines by both practitioners and consumers. This project is of national and community benefit because it will enable the potential of preventing chronic disease to be realised.Read moreRead less

One solution is to pro-actively contact and offer support with quitting to smokers in the community. This study will involve pro-actively contacting households by telephone and offering intensive, personalised telephone counselling to smokers to support them in the quitting process. Such a service will provide treatment to smokers who might not otherwise seek assistance to quit, thereby greatly increasing the potential impact of quit smoking services at a community level.Read moreRead less

In 2006, over 106,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Australia, impacting on the quality of life of patients and their partners. A significant proportion of couples report cessation of sexual and intimate contact post-cancer, resulting in considerable distress. To date, there has been no examination of this important health concern across a broad range of cancer types, from the perspective of patients and their partners. Equally, support services rarely address sexuality issues post-cancer. This project will benefit people with cancer and their partners through examining pathways to distress, and developing programs to facilitate re-negotiation of sexuality and intimacy, post-cancer.Read moreRead less
