This project contributes towards the ARC priority goal on advanced materials and frontier technologies by developing an intelligent freeform biofabrication facility to produce accurate anatomical biocompatible replica structures and implants for reconstructive surgery. The products, produced from patient's CT or MRI scan data, will contribute to complex surgical procedure planning and patient education. The proposed facility will be based on multifunctional freeform fabrication process supported by intelligent software tools and database of biocompatible materials. The prospective outcomes are likely to have an excellent commercial and patenting potential that may help Australia become a leader in biomanufacturing technology.Read moreRead less

1.Benefit the health & economic well being of Australian society by rapidly supplying organs and tissues.
2.Benefit the academic community by a multidisciplinary approach, involving several academic Institutions in the fields of surgery, tissue engineering, physiology, morphology, polymer chemistry & biomolecular engineering that will produce basic scientific data with a practical application. Post-graduate students and staff will train & gain significant knowledge in this area.
3. Benefit industry through new product development and IP. This project advances a platform technology with multiple applications.Read moreRead less

Summary
The effectiveness of intervention in communication and safety climate in the operating room. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention on teamwork behaviours in surgery. It will deliver beneficial effects for communication in service delivery, safety and patient care in support of health care in high risk environments.
Computational haemodynamics system for prediction of risk of rupture of cerebral aneurysms. Every year about 2000 Australians suffer a ruptured aneurysm in the brain and some 750 of these die within 4 weeks. Since there is an increase in the detection of unruptured aneurysms, especially in healthy young people, there is an urgent need to be able to decide which lead to rupture and to provide suitable treatment options. This project, which will provide markedly improved means of patient-specific ....Computational haemodynamics system for prediction of risk of rupture of cerebral aneurysms. Since there is an increase in the detection of unruptured aneurysms, especially in healthy young people, there is an urgent need to be able to decide which lead to rupture and to provide suitable treatment options. This project, which will provide markedly improved means of patient-specific risk determination for aneurysm rupture, will have significant impact in reducing associated costs on the national health burden due to cerebral hemorrhage and stroke, on community productivity and disability and on more efficient targeting of expensive and dangerous brain surgery.Read moreRead less
Three dimensional (3D) optical coherence tomography in cancer. This project will establish for the first time how well 3D optical coherence tomography, a form of medical imaging, can image cancer. Based on this, a version built into a needle will be developed which will enable extension much deeper into tissues than previously possible to image cancer and to guide related surgical procedures.
Examining healthcare professionals' communication across the surgical pathway to improve patient safety. Recent data show breakdowns in communication contributed to 16% of sentinel events in Australia, the majority of which were of a surgical nature. Financial costs associated with adverse events are enormous, estimated at around $A2billion/year. Economic burden is predicted to increase with further complexities surrounding patients' surgical care. This study will result in new knowledge about communication patterns to inform the development of reporting methods and strategies that positively influence the practices of healthcare professionals. Strategies could be extrapolated to the broader healthcare sector, and provide tactical direction aimed at averting clinical errors, preventing patient harm and reducing healthcare costs.Read moreRead less
Systemic Safety: the meanings of behaviour in contexts of surgical care. This collaborative project aims to improve our understanding of interacting systems of communication, as exemplified by the context of surgery. This collaborative project aims to improve our understanding of interacting systems of communication, as exemplified by the context of surgery. Increasingly, adverse events in operative care are considered systemic rather than a product of system breakdown. Existing systems, and how they lead to adverse events, need to be made more explicit. We will describe surgical practice as a system of meaning-bearing systems, integrated from context to content to expression, and incorporating language and other symbolic systems. We will display the ensemble effects of choices in these systems and how they predispose towards or inhibit adverse outcomes through systemic networks.Read moreRead less
