Tobacco continues to be a leading cause of preventable death and disease in Australia. Those who are socially disadvantaged are at higher risk of smoking, which contributes to the health gap between the rich and poor. This research will provide evidence for policy makers on interventions which could reduce smoking among the most disadvantaged in society. It will also examine whether less harmful nicotine products could a reduce health risks in smokers who find quitting difficult.

Despite the eradication of smallpox by vaccination, poxviruses remain a threat to public health because of bioterrorist scares from kept variola stocks and because of the possible emergence of other poxvirus pathogens from the extensive animal reservoir. The structural analysis of the assembly of poxvirus will not only improve our knowledge of fundamental processes, highly conserved in DNA viruses, but could also provide valuable targets for the rational design of antiviral drugs.

To understand who is at risk for depression, we need to understand how both the environment and biological factors promote risk at specific times in the life cycle. Using a life course approach, the aims of this study are to (a) investigate the developmental stages (pre-natal, childhood and adolescence) of cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors in young adulthood; (b) identify what is influencing these developmental stages either directly or indirectly and (c) quantify the public health burden of these stages and individual factors. Findings will enhance our understanding of the developmental stages of CVD and their public health burden.
Novel Genetic And Environmental Modifiers Of The Risk Of Iron Overload-related Disease In HFE-associated Hereditary Haemochromatosis In Cohort Of Middle-aged Australians

Summary
People who carry mutations in the HFE gene are pre-disposed to body iron overload but not all of them developed subsequent disease. According to the investigators of the “HealthIron” study in Melbourne, only 28% of men and 1% of women with faulty HFE genes go on to develop disease. This study has recruited more than 1,000 people from the community, and will determine which environmental and genetic risk factors stop people with iron overload from getting symptoms of disease.
This award will allow Associate Professor Marie Pirotta to continue her work in establishing whether the complementary medicines widely used in our community for cancer are actually effective and safe. Her research plans include a clinical trial of acupuncture for arm swelling after breast cancer surgery and of the nutrient lycopene, found in tomatoes, for symptoms in men after treatment for prostate cancer.

This research program focuses on investigating genetic, environmental and lifestyle causes of cancer, preventing new cases of cancer, and improving outcomes after a cancer diagnosis, particularly for melanoma and gynaecological cancer, which carry a heavy burden in the Australian population. The research will also inform the best allocation of health system resources for cancer control, and ensure translation of research findings into cancer prevention, clinical practice and policy outcomes.
