This project investigates children's competence in using language, from a biological perspective. The past twenty years has witnessed innovative developments in behavioral measures (e.g., eye-movement recording) and computational models of language development. I propose to integrate this research with the study of the neural basis of cognitive processes, using a new methodology for functional brain imaging, magnetoencephalography (MEG), The project combines behavioral, computational, and biological methods to better understand (a) the nature of linguistic knowledge, (b) how logical expressions are acquired, and (c) how knowledge of logic and language are put to use by children in production and comprehension.Read moreRead less

The Fellowship will seize the opportunity for Australia to become a world leader of research and applications in user-led innovation for the creative industries. It will show how Australia can uplift the capabilities of the general population in multimedia literacy, to promote wider social participation in creative content production. It also provides practical solutions for national and international dissemination of consumer-led content, thereby effectively adding new national networks of communication for creative content and civic participation. Linking professional production and consumer-led innovation will strengthen both the service economy and the Australian polity.Read moreRead less

The proposed project will generate highly significant, fundamental advances in separation science by developing new stationary phases and separation technologies suitable for the analysis of very complex samples which cannot be addressed by current methods. These technologies will be applied in a wide range of areas of national importance including pre-and post-blast identification of explosives in counter-terrorism applications; environmental, clinical, and forensic analysis; energy generation and foods. The project will also lead to very significant new intellectual property having extremely high commercial potential worldwide, and thereby generates the promise of considerable direct financial returns to Australia.Read moreRead less

This Fellowship aims to develop a consistent advanced nonlinear method for the analysis and behaviour of steel and composite building frames that are subjected to elevated temperatures. There is widespread feeling amongst practitioners that, in the absence of reliable techniques for verifying this behaviour, the regulatory need for fire protection of steel is excessive, and the high expense involved in providing this protection is leading structural steel being rejected in engineering design. This growing trend is leading to a potential downturn in structural steel production, which has serious economic and social ramifications on Australian communities whose fabric is centred on this activity.Read moreRead less
